“LET THE SUNSHINE IN”
Some months ago I was sitting
on the back door steps and heard
some children singing:
“Let the sunshine in
Take it with a grin
Smilers never lose
And frowners never win.”
I thought what a good motto
for living these words express.
My mind then went back a few
years to a scene I witnessed when
visiting a neighbor. This friend
had three dogs whose names were
Dusty, Scrappy and Missie. The
lady of the house threw out some
food that landed in one pile. Mis
sie and Scrappy ran for the food,
each afraid that the other was
going to get the larger portion.
Before either had begun to eat,
they growled and showed their
teeth at each other. Within a few
seconds they were fighting. Dus
ty, who hadn’t made a sound, slip
ped up and ate all the food and
returned to her shady spot under
a bush. So, when Scrappy and
Missie had finished their “spat,”
they were the losers and Dusty
had gained the food.
How much like animals these
human being really are! We
growl and snarl and fight, only
to lose in the end. We wound
the feelings of those whom we
fa>ve the most. How much we
could gain through love, under
standing and cooperation.
Then, we think of this same
principle, greed, on a national
scale. How selfishness and greed
assert themselves at peace con
ferences and leave the world no
nearer the solutions of the prob
lems of war than before.
Hatred and bitterness grow if
allowed to remain in the human

Interment At
Pepperton For
E. W. Hudgens
Funeral services for Mr. Enoch
Weldon (Bill) Hudgens, 48, of
Route 2, Mill Street, Jackson,
were conducted Thursday after
noon from the Second Baptist
Church with the Rev. A. L. Price,
pastor, officiating. Interment was
in Pepperton Cemetery with
Sherrell Funeral Home in charge
of arrangements.
Mr. Hudgens died about six
o’clock Wednesday morning, Apr
il 12th, in a private hospital and
had been in declining health for
several months. He was born in
Butts County August 26, 1923,
the son of the late Mr. Enoch
Hudgens and Mrs. Mattie Haw
kins Hudgens, who survives, both
of Butts County.
He was a member of the Sec
heart. They are deadly enemies
wrecking lives, homes and na
tions. They must be driven out.
To leave the heart empty would
not better the condition, but fill
your heart so full of love there
will not be room for hatred.
Drive out the bad by the good
coming in. The greed of Silas
Marner was replaced with love
for Eppie. The Love of Christ
constrains us —holds us together
—gives us something to live for
and to live by.
Let’s fill our lives so full of
loving thoughts, kind deeds and
well-wishing that there won’t be
any room for greed and quarrel
ing. May we fashion our lives
after the order of Christ—Love,
and not after the order of Cain,
\ hatred and murder. Let us take
life with a grin. Let the “Sun
shine of God’s love come in and
we shall never be a loser but
always a winner. “Love one
another, for love is of God.”

Here is one of those great epigrams of
my favorite philosopher Dad! Or Was it
Mother? It’s hard to remember for sure.
But, anyway, it isn’t true. The older I get
the more I realize that there are some who
can tie their own neckties but still aren’t
men.
Maturity is not measured by what you
can do. It is measured rather by your reasons
for doing—or not doing—things you can do.
Think that sentence through once more.
Tour son will become a man when he has j
•ound reasons for doing one thing and not;
doing something else, even though he could 1
have done either.
