LETTER TO SANTA
Dear Santa Claus - “Thank you
very much for the presents you
left me last year. This year I
would like a doll and some out
fits. Also I would like anew pen
cil case and some new slippers
please. I think that is all I want
so Merri Christmas.”
In Helsinki, Finland there is a
“Santa Claus Letter Service”, and
part of the service consists of an
answering service. The response
could read: “Dear little friend”
How are you: I am getting to be
a rather old Santa Claus, a little
lonely as well, so I like letters.”
Good Time to
Count Calories
Eat, drink, and be merry be
cause tomorrow you’re going to
be fat.
What better time to do some
homework with your calorie
book? Ignorance is not bliss
when it comes to calorie count
ing.
Don’t starve yourself on party
days or you’ll lose your head at
the sight of the first chip and dip
tray. Breakfast on a grapefruit, a
poached egg and coffee or tea.
For lunch try a salad with tomato
juice for dressing and a glass of
skim milk. Drink a glass of milk
while you’re getting ready for the
party. It will take the edge off
your appetite. You’re in big
trouble if you arrive at the party
hungry.
Try this little experiment for
a day - keep a piece of paper and
a pencil with you all day and
write down everything you eat.
If you taste the spaghetti - add
it to your' list: If you lick the
icing spoon, mark it down. You
will discover that a bite of this
and a bite of that adds up to a
lot of calories.
If you’re an incorrigible nib
bler, keep raw vegetables ready
for snacks. Low calorie soda pop
and diet gelatin desserts are good
items to have on hand.
A diet will go a long way in
changing your eating habits!
THE DOOR . . . There are
many traditions associated with
Christmas. Decorations, the ex
change of gifts, visiting with
friends and relatives; these are
part of the observance. One thing
remains to make the Christmas
complete. Visit the church of
your choice this Christmas.

Incomes In
County
Show Gain
Thanks to the income gains
they have chalked up in the last
few years, many Butts County
families find themselves in
higher income brackets than
before.
Some of them, whose earn
ings had been below SB,OOO, have
graduated to the SIO,OOO and up
level. Their former positions on
the income ladder have been
taken over, in turn, by families
that had been receiving less
than SB,OOO.
The upward shift has been
taking place all across the
board, with the result that the
middle and upper brackets
contain a larger proportion of
the local population than ever,
leaving a smaller segment in
the lower brackets.
The findings are brought out
in a special report, covering
every area of the country,
released by Sales Management.
What was sought through the
study was a better understand
ing of the purchasing power of
each community than was
afforded by its “average
income” alone.
Is that average made up of a
small proportion of families
with big incomes counter
balancing a very large propor
tion with small incomes or are
earnings more evenly spread?
In Butts County, it is shown,
no less than 49.1 percent of the
households had disposable cash
incomes, after payment of their
income taxes, of $5,000 or more.
This was a greater proportion
than was recorded locally three
years ago, when a similar study
was made. It was then 43.4
percent.
Since the report is concerned
solely with money income, it
understates somewhat the
standing of farm communities,
where lower living spsts and the
availability of home-grown
products are valuable consider
ations.
The findings reveal, through a
breakdown, just what propor
tion of Butts County’s popula
tion lies within each income
bracket.
The figures list 20.1 percent of
the local households in the
group with net earnings of
$5,000 to SB,OOO and another 10.7
percent in the SB,OOO to SIO,OOO
category. Those with incomes
above SIO,OOO constitute 18.3
percent. The remainder have
net earnings of $5,000 or less.
However, although more
money is being made, a sizeable
part of the gain is being wiped
out by rising living costs.
