Flovilla
Church Plans
Yule Services
Flovilla United Methodists
plan their annual Christmas
supper and program for 7:00
p.m. Wednesday evening, De
cember 20. Each family will
bring covered dishes and
participate in the Christmas
tree festivities. The Rev. John
Huggins will present a special
reading, “Christmas at the
Hospital” for the program. The
evening will close with Christ
mas carols and informal
fellowship.
The Youth Sunday School
class at Flovilla will also
present a Christmas program
for the church. It will be held
during the Sunday School hour,
Sunday morning, December 24.
New Program
Begun At
Prison Here
Many of Georgia’s toughest
criminals will be transferred to
the State Diagnostic and
Classification Center at Jack
son in early January, according
to Warden and Superintendent
Dr. Allen L. Ault.
Dr. Ault said that the
renovation process will be
complete in January at the
Center and that prisoners will
be received as they cause
trouble at other institutions. Mr.
Ault pointed out that the Center
will still have 844 cells but one
cellhouse has been sealed off
and is being renovated for
housing the troublemakers.
Dr. Ault explained that this is
a very new program of
rehabilitation and includes very
intensive training at which the
men will undergo group
counselling. Dr. Ault said that
the program may include new
personnel brought in to work
with the prisoners during this
adjustment phase while others
will come from personnel
already on hand who will
receive special training.
“We hope to take these men
and help them to do a complete
about-face in their behavior
that got them into trouble,”
Warden Ault said.
By putting all the prison
system’s rotten apples in one
barrel, Warden Ault and two
University of Georgia pro
fessors plan to employ a full
behavior modification program
with the prisoners.
“The emphasis is on the
positive; granting privileges for
proper behavior, rather than
punishing negative actions,” a
spokesman said.
The adjustment center will be
divided into four wings, each
housing approximately 25 in
mates.
Asa man progresses in his
attitude and behavior, he will be
moved into anew wing with
more privileges.
If the behavior modification
process sounds too simple,
Warden Ault reminds people of
the dangers involved in dealing
with men who have caused
riots, planned escapes, and
assaulted guards in other
prisons.
“In each wing, the correc
tional officer will stay inside a
booth where he can observe
safely the inmates,” the warden
added.
In addition to each wing being
sealed off from the others, the
entire cellhouse will be sealed
off from the rest of the prison.
One hundred and twenty-five
maximum security prisoners
are currently assigned to the
Jackson prison, but will not be
included in the behavior
modification program.
The prison processes more
than 4,000 transient or “diag
nostic” prisoners each year,
who only remain at the Jackson
facility for approximately eight
weeks.
Added security measures
include a metal detector which
scans each person who enters
the prison, a roving guard
patrol who is never over five
minutes away from any point on
the prison grounds, a regional
bloodhound program housed at
the prison, and special trained
riot-control officers.
Entry and exit from the
Jackson prison is through an
underground tunnel with gates
electronically controled from a
watchtower.
Warden Ault pointed out that
there had been no escapes from
the Diagnostic and Classifica
tion Center since the new
security measures were put into
effect over a year ago.

Funeral Homes Make
Statement On
Ambulance Service
Three local funeral homes in
a letter dated August 15,1972 to
the Butts County Commis
sioners informed the county
governing body why they will
discontinue ambulance service
in Butts County on December
31, 1972.
The three funeral homes are
Haisten Brothers, Inc., Trimier
Funeral Home and Howard
Funeral Home. A fourth
funeral home, Sherrell, did not
sign the letter and has
presented a plan to the county
commissioners which, if adopt
ed, would permit continuation
of ambulance service in the
county.
The letter to the commis
sioners is reproduced as
follows:
Jackson, Georgia
August 15, 1972
Hon. Alfred D. Fears,
Chairman
The Butts County Board
of Commissioners
Butts County Courthouse
Jackson, Georgia 30233
Gentlemen:
The 1972 General Assembly of
Georgia passed legislation
regulating Ambulances in Geor
gia. The law becomes effective
January 1, 1973 and requires
compliance by January 1, 1974.
Recently a meeting was held
in Griffin and one of your
members attended in order to
become acquainted with the
problem.
Already in Georgia 80 percent
of the funeral homes who have
been operating Ambulances
have given up this part of their
business and others have
indicated they will discontinue
the service by Jan. 1, 1973.
We have taken a long hard
look at the Law and must advise
you that we must join those who
feel the law cannot be complied
with from our facility on
individual basis. Therefore, this
is to inform you that on
December 31, 1972 we must
discontinue Ambulance service
in Butts County.
The added equipment called
for and the additional men we
would have to add to our staff
(all schooled in becoming
ambulance attendants) would
place such a financial burden on
us that we could not overcome
the loss and it would soon place
us in a position we could not
continue our funeral service.
This we feel you will understand
as have Commissioners all over
Georgia.
We understand that some
funds are available to the
various counties for equipment
and can be applied for through
the Department of Human
Resources at the State Capitol
in Atlanta.
Many of the counties have
been able to work out an
agreement with the local
hospital to take over this
service, using the personnel as
hospital Corpsmen in addition
to their ambulance duty and
subsidizing them with county
funds necessary.
Please be assured that we
dislike very much to take this
action but feel we have no
alternative.
We pledge to you our
cooperation in making arrange
ments for Butts County to have
the kind of service the people
deserve.
Yours very truly,
Ben M. Haisten, V.P.
