Father James F. Kelly C.SS.R.
St. Mary’s Catholic Church
1973 is only four days old by
now and I would imagine that
all of us by now are getting the
feeling that it is going to be a
simple rerun of last year.
Perhaps the only thing that will
change ’73 into anew and better
year is ourselves, and what we
do with the 361 days that are left
of this year of 1973.
Take for instance what the
scripture tells us of the attitude
of Jesus who took on the
condition of a slave, making
himself a servant for all of us
instead of clinging to his
powerful kingship and divinity.
We really marvel that Jesus
“emptied himself” because this
action points directly to a
central mystery and experience
of our won lives. The meaning of
our existence eludes us unless,
in some practical, workable
way, we choose to empty
ourselves, as slaves rather than
aspire to possess power. The
imitation of Christ has always
depended more on this intuition
rather than on some merely
outward behavior. No, the
essence of the Christian
response has always been an
interior mystery; what we
surrender is inside of us, in our
feelings and attitudes towards
others. The Christian’s inner
life is not, however, just a
calming form of transcendental
meditation; it is the living
experience of emptying our
selves of that selfishness which
keeps us from being servants to
each other. This is done, not by
numbering ourselves, but by
feeling the pain which is
involved in love, that is real not
sentimental. We come alive in
Jesus whenever we do this; the
rest of our lives takes shape
around this demanding commit-
ment.
Emptying ourselves of sel
fishness does not mean day
dreaming about some great
event during which we will join
our names to the lists of heroes
by sacrificing our lives for the
multitudes. The best of us may
at times enjoy the fantasy of
such a glorious moment but,
alas, it actually comes to very
few. We cannot wait for a
distant and luminous instant in
which our generosity will be
realized.

That advances in propulsion,
miniaturization of electronics
and the use of antiship mis
siles now make it possible to
combine a lethal capability
with a small crew in a small
boat?
* * *
That the U.S. Navy total of
37 small warships (missile
boats, torpedo boats, fast
gunboats and fast patrol
boats) is far behind the
U.S.S.R. with 425, Red China
with 100, Yugoslavia with
100 and many other nations?
That the answer to the threat
of small missile ships and
boats may be found in the
rapidly emerging field of sur
face skimmers—the air
cushion vehicles and hydro
foils?
Emptying ourselves is a
simple and plain thing; no day
goes by that does not offer an
opportunity to us. It is part of
our general overall response to
life and is found, for example, in
the following situtations.
Listening to others even when
we are busy with a thousand
dreams of our own. If we think
about it for a moment, we will
realize that we are all looking
for someone to listen to us.
Secondly, by going more deeply
into ourselves than our whims
or superficial feelings would
ordinarily allow. There are so
many occasions in which we
shrug off the possibilities of
further self-knowledge by say
ing something like, Well that’s
the way I am, or I don’t want to
talk about it. The loss involved
here is to ourselves rather than
to others because we have
missed a chance to grow and to
get to the roots of our identity,
found ultimately in union with
the Jesus whose attitude should
be ours.
1973 does not have to be a
rerun of last year or any year, it
can be anew adventure, a real
quest for the attitude of Jesus.
This year 73 can be a year in
which we empty ourselves of
whatever blocks the attitude
and life that Jesus Christ offers
to us, not by words by by
example.
Happy New Year 1973.
