Multiple Sclerosis Mystery Stymies
Science; Afflicts 500,000 In U. S.
Multiple sclerosis, sometimes
called MS, is truly a mystery.
No one knows what causes it, or
what cures it. No one knows
why it strikes some people and
not others, or why it affects
each of its victims differently.
MS and related diseases affect
about 500,000 persons in the
United States; it is this
country’s most serious crip
pling neurological disease.
MS is a disease of the nervous
system. The protective sheath
around the nerve fibres inside
the brain and spinal cord breaks
down in places, allowing
interferences with the com
munications among nerve cells
and muscle cells. For those who
have MS, the outcome can be
anything from minor ailments
to serious disabilities.
The damage to the protective
sheath, which is made of a
substance called myelin, is
unfortunately done by the
body’s own immune system -
the white blood cells and the
antibodies that are supposed to
protect the body from disease.
Somehow, their ability to
distinguish between friend and
foe, or “self” and “nonself”,
has gone awry.
What sets this misguided
process into motion? Some
scientists believe the cause
might be a virus, one that stays
inactive in the host for many
years before beginning to do its
damaging work. Or perhaps MS
is started, as well as carried
out, by a malfunction in the
immune system. Both points of
view have some evidence to
support them, but more basic
research is needed.
Some of the most important
research is on a disease that can
be induced in animals and is
similar to MS. The disease is
called EAE, short for experi
mental allergic encephalomye
litis. If an animal is injected
with nerve tissue from another
animal, its own immune system
becomes sensitized and then
begins to attack its own nerve
tissue. Although the symptons
vary from species to species as
well as from animal to animal,
Who Will Be Chairman Of
Butts County Board Of Commissioners?
GEORGIA LAWS 1953, PAGE 2070
BUTTS COMMISSIONERS.
No. 16 (House Bill No. 122).
An Act to amend an Act creating a Board of Commissioners of Roads and
Revenues for Butts County, approved February 24, 1941 (Ga. Laws 1941, p. 793),
as amended by an Act approved February 22, 1943 (Ga. Laws 1943, p. 841), and
an Act approved February 1, 1946 (Ga. Laws 1946, p. 239), so as to provide that
a majority of the board shall constitute a quorum; to change the compensation of
the commissioners and the clerk; to provide that the person receiving the highest
vote shall be the chairman; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Georgia as follows:
Section 1. An Act creating a Board of Commissioners of Roads and Revenues
for Butts County, approved Feb. 24, 1941, (Ga. Laws 1941, P. 793), as amended by
an Act approved February 22, 1943 (Ga. Laws 1943, p. 841) and an Act approved
February 1, 1946 (Ga. Laws 1946, p. 239), is hereby amended by striking from Sec
tion 4 the words “The Commissioners shall organize by electing one of their mem
bers chairman”, and substituting in lieu thereof the words “The person receiving
the highest number of votes in the election for members of the board shall be the
chairman”, so that when so amended Section 4 will read as follows:
“Section 4. Said commissioners elected in the election first above provided
for shall meet at the courthouse in the county and-shall take the oath prescribed
by law before the ordinary and shall each give bond in some surety company autho
rized to do business in this State to be approved by the ordinary in the amount
of five thousand ($5,000) dollars, conditioned upon the full and faithful perform
ance of their duties and the strict accounting of all bonds of the county which may
come into their hands. The person receiving the highest number of votes in the
election for members of the board shall be the chairman, whose duty it shall be to
preside at all meetings and sign all orders of the commissioners. The chairman shall
have the right to vote on all questions before the board, and shall also have the
right to make motions and perform all duties imposed under this Act upon said
commissioners.”
Last week The Jackson Progress-Argus stated that Mr. Fears has been elected
to serve as chairman by the Board members.
We, a group of interested citizens, ask that the Board of Commissioners abide
by the law as set out above.
THURSDAY, JANUARY 4, 1973
it is the most relevant
experiment system available
for MS research.
At the Salk Institute, in San
Diego, as well as at other
laboratories around the world,
scientists have isolated the
particular molecule in the
injected material -a consti
tuent of normal brain tissue -
that is responsible for the
animal disease. Some research
ers think that a molecule
designed to resemble this one
could, if injected into an already
diseased animal, distract the
immune system and arrest the
course of the disease. However,
there has not yet been enough
experimentation to establish
this theory.
Other research is needed too
- virus studies, epidemiological
surveys and clinical tests. They
mystery of MS must be solved
as soon as possible.
