NATIONAL DEFENSE WAS
DISCUSSED DAR MEETING
At their January 20 meeting,
the William Mclntosh Chapter,
Daughters of the American
Revolution heard Miss Ruth
Phinazee discuss our present
national defense situation as
viewed by former Senator
Margaret Chase Smith. Three
concerns of Senator Smith are
(1) that the trend in the United
States is toward the lowering of
our military strength and that
by 1976 Russia will far outstrip
us; (2) that the only way to
reverse this trend is through an
informed public, (3) rather
than spreading our interest so
world wide our top priority
should be the Carribean area,
South America and Canada.
Mrs. Loma Redman is chapter
National Defense chairman.
As February 1 is the end of
the DAR year, a report was
made on activities accom
plished. Two new projects
supported during the year were
the DAR “Gift to the Nation”,
the remodeling, furnishing and
opening to the public of two
rooms at Independence Hall in
Philadelphia and the further
remodeling of Meadow Gar
dens in Augusta, the home of
George Walten, a signer of the
Declaration of Independence.
Mrs. Elizabeth Sitten O’Neal
presented to the chapter a
Chapter Regent’s Pin. The pin
was found among the posses
sions of her aunt, Miss Lois
Biles. The pin will be worn by
the present regent and then
passed on to succeeding
regents. The wearing of the pin
will be particularly meaningful
to those who knew Miss Biles, a
most loyal and dedicated
member of the William
Mclntosh Chapter.
Miss Delia Watkins was
hostess for the meeting held at
the Jackson Clubhouse.
FEEDS US WELL
Today, one farm worker in
the United States produces
enough food for himself and
51 other persons. In 1951, he
produced only enough food for
himself and 16 others. This
increased production per farm
worker is unmatched anywhere
else in the world, and is the
main reason we Americans
have 'do'spend only about 16
percent of our take-home pay
for food.
