Luke 12: 16-21
One of the most interesting
stories in the New Testament is
the parable of the rich farmer.
Interesting because this story
depicts so many of us today.
Certainly we cannot deny our
longing for the finer things of
life. Is it really wrong to feel
this way? Is it wrong to want to
get ahead?
The rich farmer was self
centered. This is the problem
with so many people. He was
interested in saving what he
had. That is not wrong. God
saves. When God created the
earth, He put a lot of water on it
and through all the centuries
He has kept every drop of it.
Not one grain of the earth’s
sand has ever been lost. After
Jesus fed the multitude He had
the disciples gather up the
fragments that none be wasted.
Farm work is hard and to be
successful one must put in long
hard hours. The man was not
excessively greedy. He did not
try to buy up all of the land in
the country. He just had
enough for his needs. Then why
did Jesus call him a fool? In
Psalms 14 we read, “The fool
hath said in his heart there is
no God”. The rich farmer
would have attested to his
belief in God. The great
problem was that this belief
was only in his mind.
When it came to his feelings,
his heart, he had left God out.
Why? Because he did not feel
the need of God. There is a
difference between believing in
your mind and believing in
your heart. I have had people
talk to me about Divine healing
and say they believed there is
something to it. On the other
hand I have been called to the
hospital in the middle of the
night to pray with a mother and
father who were about to lose a
small boy. Their belief is
different because they feel the
need so deeply. A person
seeking help for their life must
feel more than intellectual
belief, it must be heart felt.
The possession of wealth is
not wrong. Jesus never said it
was. But it is most dangerous.
Jesus talked about money
more than any other subject.
The problem with the rich
farmer was not that he
cheated, robbed or lied, but
that he was self centered. He
had a My problem. “My
fruits”, “My goods”, “My
barns.”
He showed no gratitude, only,
pride. He reached the point
that he felt no need of God. He
was self sufficient. Jesus said
such a person is a fool. He was
blinded by his own success and
sense of well being and could
not look ahead to future needs.
“But God said unto him, Thou
fool this night thy soul shall be
required of thee: then whose
