County Asked To Cooperate In
May sth Walk For Mankind
The Jackson Kiwanis Club is
calling on all Butts countians to
support and cooperate with the
club’s concept of a “Walk fen*
Mankind” to be held on
Saturday, May sth.
Denny O’Neal is chairman of
the club’s Walk for Mankind
Committee and said last week
that certain steps will be taken
in informing the public about
the walk. There is no minimum
goal; however, O’Neal stated
that he hopes the project will
raise between $5,000410,000.
It is the goal of the
committee to have 500 people
participating in what will
probably be a 20 mile walk at
an average of S2O per person.
O’Neal said that 40 percent of
the gross revenue remains with
the Jackson Kiwanis Club
while 60 percent goes for
Project Concern.
O’Neal made committee
appointments at the March
13th meeting of the Jackson
Kiwanis Club and these include
the following:

Joe Taylor, Chairman
Doyle Jones
Bailey Crockarell

Batting Cage
Should
Aid Hitters
BY BRIAN WAITS
Progress-Argus Sports Writer
Jackson High’s baseball
team is anticipating one of its
finest seasons ever in 1973, and
one of the reasons may be the
new batting cage that the
Devils have this season.
Anyone riding by Wallace
Field these days can see this
funny looking cage located
behind the left field fence. This
batting cage was built by
Gerald Wilson and Darrell
Pippin with the help of then
classes. The cage is being used
to improve the team’s hitting
ability.
Inside one end of the cage is
located a pitching machine
which throws baseballs to
hitters at the other end. The
batting cage keeps the base
balls inside the area and no one
is needed to run down the balls.
Red Devil Coach Danny Blue
felt that last year’s major
weakness was hitting, but with
the batting cage everyone is
getting an overdose of batting
practice. The team feels that
this additional batting will add
up to problems for the opposing
pitchers.
The batting cage will also
help Jackson’s summer base
ball program, with the area
Babe Ruth and Little League
players learning the funda
mentals of hitting.
Jackson has always pro
duced fine defensive teams
over the years, and now with
the new batting cage added to
the program, Jackson hitters
should start producing.
Jackson High opens the
baseball season against Grif
fin, March 24 at 2:00 p.m., with
the game being played at
Wallace Field in Jackson.
