GOLF TEAM TO BE STRONG - Jackson High’s 1973 golf team is expected to be a
bonafide contender for region and state honors with veteran players returning in every position.

The Jackson Red Devils Golf
Team began its 1973 season in
Macon on Monday afternoon
against Bibb Tech. The
Jackson golf team is a strong
contender for a Region 5-A
championship and possibly a
state championship.
The Jackson golf team began
together in the ninth grade and
has shown a tremendous
improvement during the past
two seasons.
During the previous two
seasons the team competed
against schools in Region 3-AA,
a region with very strong
competition. In 1971 the
Jackson team placed seventh
in the thirteen team region. All
members of that team were
ninth graders, except one. In
1972 the team won second place
in the region, losing to the
eventual state AA champion,
Woodward Academy.
The 1973 season should be a
different story for the Red
Devil golfers. Jackson now
plays in Region 5-A. This
region has only four other
schools participating in golf
competition during 1973. They
are Carrollton, Haralson Coun
ty, Manchester, and Rock
mart. Red Devil golf team
Coach Joe Davis feels that
Carrollton should be the Devils
toughest test in their quest for
a region title in 1973.
The Devils also play several
large AAA and AA schools in
our area. Among these are
Mary Persons, Griffin, Rock
dale County, and Newton
County.
Those coming out for the 1973
team include Ronnie Acree,
Lee Bennett, Larry Biles,
Keith Daniel, Billy Duke,
Terry Duke, Chuck Ivey,
Dennis Morgan, Johnny Mor
ris, Kenny Norsworthy, Mike
Peck, and Dan Fears.
In giving his outlook for the
1973 season, Coach Davis
stated, “Last year our team
averaged about 84 strokes per
match. If the Devils can break
80 and have a team average in
the 70’s, we stand a good
chance of winning our region
and a state championship.

Jamboree Here March 30 To
Mark End of Spring Practice
BY BRIAN WAITS
Progress-Argus Sports Writer
The Jackson Red Devils’ 1973 spring football practice is well
under way, as Ron Wade and his assistants go about the task of
rebuilding Jackson High football for the 1973 season.
Coach Wade is looking over a large group of young players
in hopes of finding the right boys to fill seven vacancies in the
offensive and defensive lines.
Despite a dim outlook for the future, Coach Wade states that
many of the young players are working hard for a spot on the
team. He also added that there are many boys working out with
the team but not out for football, and he feels that these boys would
be an asset to the Jackson High athletic program.
Forty boys reported for
practice when it began on
March 5. Those going out for
football include Bobby Long,
Timmie Moss, Scott Taylor,
Andy Crumbley, Ricky Askin,
John Morgan, Jimmy Cle
mons, Sam Thurman, Johnny
McGruder, Marvin Banks,
Clifford Lawson, Darrell Sum
mers, James Morgan, Curtis
Smith, Norman Alexander,
Bobby Askin, Bernard May
field, Randy Trimble, Keith
Hobbs, Aubrey Burford, Mark
Cawthon, Mike Hamlin, Ellis
Giddens, Jeff Patterson, La
mar Smith, Vincent Smith,
Ricky Smith Buddy Smith,
Dale White, Charles Jones,
Jerry White, James Clark,
Riley Lawrence, Larry Jester,
and Tom Robison.
Regulars returning from the
1972 Red Devils squad are
James Morgan, Scott Taylor,
Bernard Mayfield, Darrell
Summers, Andy Crumbley,
Timmie Moss, and Bobby
Askin. Riley Lawrence is also
expected to return in the fall,
despite a foot injury this
spring.
Wade also cited many
players who have worked hard
and looked exceptionally well.
This group includes Jimmy
Clemons, Dale White, Ricky
Smith, Lamar Smith, James
Clark, and Larry Jester.
Many others are coming
along well and improving with
every day’s workout.
The kicking game is also
something that has received
special attention in the past
several weeks. The loss of
James Brown leaves the Devils
without an accomplished
place-kicker or punter. Darrell
Summers, Andy Crumbley,
Rex Smith, and Tom Robison
THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, JACKSON, GEORGIA
have all been working on this
phase of the game this spring.
Coach Ron Wade describes
the style of play for the up
coming season as one of
change. There will be several
changes in offensive sets, and
the Devils will switch to a
multiple defense, as they lack
the size of the 1972 Red Devil
team.
The month long spring
practice climaxes on March 30
at 8:00 p.m. with the annual
Football Jamboree. This
year’s Jamboree will be played
on Red Devil Hill. Jackson and
Henry County will go up
against Monticello and Mary
Persons.
The coaching staff will also
get a chance to look at the
Jackson team as they go up
against last year’s senior
football players at 7:30 p.m. on
March 23.
Tennis Players
Attended
Emory Clinic
Eight Jackson High tennis
players attended a one day
tennis clinic at Emory College
last Saturday. The clinic was
conducted by the Emory
College coaching staff and
members of the college tennis
team.
Despite the cool gusty wind
the clinic was a success. There
were 50 students attending the
clinic from surrounding coun
ties. The day started with
group instruction involving the
forehand stroke, backhand
stroke, and the serve.

The Hustling Devils
BY DANNY BLUE
BASEBALL COACH
The Jackson baseball team
promises to be one of the most
exciting teams in Jackson High
history. Several members of
last year’s team return after
posting a 17-7 record. This
nucleus along with talented
new-comers makes Jackson a
title contender.
Coach Blue, like most
coaches, will not make a
prediction for the team. He
does promise that the team will
lead the region in hustle and
desire. Adding to talent, desire
and hustle together and you
come up with a champion.
Here’s how Coach Blue sees
the team position by position.
Pitching is adequate with Greg
Allen, an outstanding control
pitcher, being the ace of the
staff. Backing him up is
Malcolm Dahlin who could be
great if his control is up to par.
Darrell Kitchens is a spot
starter and reliever with a
good curveball, Andy Crum
bley is the sleeper of the staff
with all the tools to carry
Jackson into region contention.
Backing these four will be
Wally Jenkins and Anthony
Watts, both pitchers who can
be counted on in a tight
situation.
The infield is where the
strength of the team lies. Don
McKibben is behind the plate
and rated one of the best
defensive catchers in the state.
He also hits with power. Third
base is in the able hands of
James Brown and Dexter
Lofton. Brown is perhaps the
best hitter to play for the
Devils in many a year. Lofton
is a good fielder with an
outstanding arm. Shortstop is
being held down by the best
gloveman on the team. Tommy
Stewart. If Stewart hits as well
as he fields the Jackson offense
will thrive. Andy Crumbley is
at second base where he and
Stewart should team together
to be the best keystone
fundamentals of basketball
and building a winning spirit in
basketball. Spirit is an impor
tant part of winning - you do
not and cannot win without it.
After Spring Practice, we
will have an inter-squad game
and this will be April 12. As
Coach of the Devilettes and the
players, we would like for you
to come and watch the first
inter-squad basketball game to
be held at Jackson High School.
combination in the region.
Behind Crumbley is freshman
Scott Moore who is a bright
young prospect. First base is a
battle right now between Wally
Jenkins and Charles Norris.
Jenkins is a better hitter with
Norris being the better
gloveman.
The outfield is adequate with
Malcolm Dahlin and Jimmy
Fogg in left field. Dahlin would
have to be rated as one of the
best athletes on the team and
Fogg gets a lot done with hustle
and desire. Centerfield is
played by Darrell Kitchens and
Scott Waits. Kitchens is a
“Jack of all Trades” who can
play any position well. His
hitting is being counted on to
boost Jackson’s offense. Waits
is a freshman who can also
help the team out by pitching if
he has to. Percy Mayfield and
Norman Alexander are in
rightfield. Both are adequate
fielders but at present need to
improve their hitting.
Other members of the team
are Vincent Smith and Wesley
Lawrence who are now
participating in spring football.
The Devils first game is
Saturday against Griffin at
2:00. Griffin has one of its
finest teams in years and the
game should be close.

Devilettes Compile 20-6
Record; Set 3 Marks
BY IWANA McGEE
GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH
JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL
The Devilettes have closed their ‘72-73” season play.
The Devilettes set three records this year since 1967-68. They
are: most points in a game, most points in a season, and the
longest winning streak.
The Devilettes had another great season winning 20 games
and losing only 6. The Devilettes won first place in the Rockdale
Cos. Tournament, sub-region champs, and second place in Region
SA.
The Devilettes went into sub-region playoffs with an 18-4
win-loss record. The girls seeded number one in sub-region with an
8-0 win-loss regional record beat Lamar Cos., which placed Jackson
in regional playoffs as the number one team from sub-region.
In region playoffs, the
Devilettes beat Rockmart 45-34
to place them into regional
finals. In the next and final
night of region playoffs, the
Devilettes took on undefeated
Haralson Cos. which came into
region finals with a 25-0
win-loss record. The girls lost
to Haralson Cos. 6447; but
went on to State as the number
two team from Region SA.
In the first night of State
playoffs, the Jackson Devil
ettes took on undefeated
Berrien Cos. with a 26-0 win-loss
record. Berrien Cos. beat the
Devilettes 71-22. Haralson Cos.
and Berrien Cos. both went to
the last night in State finals.
Both teams met each other
undefeated. The game was
low-scoring, but Haralson Cos.
won over Berrien Cos. 25-23 to
take home Class A State
Championship.
The Devilettes had four girls
scoring over 200 points during
the season. Lynda Head was
leading scorer averaging 13.3
points per game, followed by
Doris Green averaging 10.4;
Pat McCaleb averaging 8.8 and
Jannis Ward averaging 8.3
points per game.
Sherry Barnes and Patsey

helped us to win several of our
games even though they didn’t
average in the double figures.
The defense held the opponents
to 1073 points while the offense
scored 1340 points.
The loss of five starters by

to the team. Lynda Head, Doris
Green, Patsey Barkley, Sherry

be missed by the Devilettes,
but with a lot of desire and
hustle the young squad can still
have a winning season.
Jannis Ward, a sophomore,

Sheree Crowder a returning

I would also like to express
my thanks and appreciation to
my basketball players for
being devoted and for the long
hours of practice they con
tributed. Those words “being
devoted” aren’t just a lot erf

takes a lot of developing. Long
