ON THE OTHER
SIDE OF THE DESK
Many years I attended school
as a pupil before I became a
teacher. I found that the life at
a teacher was different from
wha 11 presupposed. It makes a
difference when we sit where
they sat.
As I write these words, I
have received five units of
blood in preparation for
surgery. Many times have I
donated through the years a
pint of blood not thinking much
about its worth or potential.
Today I’m more appreciative
of blood and blood donors than
ever before. It is necessary to
life. Without blood there is no
life.
I’m also aware of my
dependence on others as never
before. Through others sharing
their blood, I’m regaining my
strength.
At this Lenten season we
think of the shed blood of Christ
that can make the sinner
whole. ‘The dying thief
rejoiced to see that fountain in
his day and there may I though
vile as he wash all my sins
away.” He, Christ, died that
men might live spiritually.
Many times have I read with
a pa tient the 23rd Psalm before
going to the operating room,
but never has it had greater
meaning for me than before
going myself. ‘The Lord is my
sheperd” - He will go with me
through the valley. All I know
todois to place myself in God’s
hands and in the doctor’s
hands. That is all any of us can
do at anytime, anywhere, is
place ourselves in God’s hands.
This is walking by faith with
God. “He is our refuge and
strength.” “Lift up your eyes
to Him from whence cometh
help.”
Hew do people get along
without God? How do they live
without friends? How de
pendent we are on God and on
others!

Cook Books
Popular
The Silvan Grove Hospital
Auxiliary Cookbook “Our
Daily Bread,” is fast becoming
a collector’s item in Jackson.
The $2.50 recipe book has been
selling at a fast pace with
many business houses already
having sold out.
Orders for the cookbook are
still being taken and persons
desiring the book may contact
any Hospital Auxiliary mem
ber or the following stores:
Jinks Cash Store, Hodges Ace
Home Center. Shields Jewelry
and Brookwood Beauty Salon.
Should any one of these
businesses be sold out, ar
rangements will be made for
the purchaser to secure a
cookbook. If enough interest
continues to be shown in the
books, anew shipment will be
ordered in the near future.
Money derived from the sale
of the Cookbooks goes toward
patient care at §ylvan Grove
Hospital and toward scholar
ship awards. The applications
for these scholarships will be
taken from seniors at Jackson
Christian Academy, Indian
Springs Academy and Jackson
High School and is offered to
those seniors who plan to
further their education in the
medical field. The scholarship
is open to either boy or girl.
Persons desiring to order
through the mail may write
Mrs. C. W. Shields, Bax 115,128
East Third Street, Jackson,
Ga. 30233 and enclose $2.50 for
each copy and add 35 cents for
postage and handling. Those
requesting copies of the book
are asked to please print their

shipment of the requested
copies.

Webster’s Dictionary defines
“allergy” as an “exaggerated
or pathological reaction to
substances,situations or physi
cal states that are without
comparable effect on the
average individual.”
As many pet owners know,
the “individual” may be a dog
as well as a person.
In fact, it has been estimated
by veterinarians that 10 to 15
percent of all dogs - roughly
the same percentage as in the
human population - may be
subject to allergies.
Your dog may be allergic to a
number of things. If his allergy
causes a skin condition, it may
be traced to something in his
home or neighborhood: dust,
pollen, a plant or flower or
chemicals in the soil.
The allergy may reveal itself
as inflammation, swelling
about the face, itching, scaling
of the skin or loss of hair.
These are also symptoms of
other skin problems. So your
veterinarian will have to
decide whether or not your
dog’s problem is caused by an
allergy.
All dogs can have fleas. But
while some have no serious
reaction to these pesky
parasites, other dogs can be
extremely allergic to them.
Some experts believe the
allergic condition is not from
the flealtself but from the flea
saliva.
Whatever the exact cause,
once the allergic problem has
been diagnosed by your
veterinarian, fleas are nor
mally easy to get rid of, and the
allergic reaction will disappear
along with the fleas. Fleas only
come to your dog to eat. For
proper control, your premises
should be sprayed with
insecticides.
Parasites also cause condi
tions called canine sarcoptic
mange, which causes itching,
and demodectic mange, whose
signs include redness of the
skin, swelling and loss of hair.
Sarcoptic mange is normally
easy to treat by your
veterinarian. Demodectic
mange, which usually occurs in
young dogs, less than a year
old, is more difficult to treat. It
is caused by a tiny mite called

demodex.
Many normal dogs with no
skin disorder pick up demodex
mites at one time or another.
As with many human allergies,
research has not yet shown
why the parasite multiplies in
certain dogs to create a severe
allergic reaction, while most
dogs are not affected.
Some dogs are allergic to bee
stings. Signs of this allergy
may include difficulty in
breathing, swollen lips and
face, general discomfort or
restlessness.
If your dog reacts in this
way, you should call your
veterinarian immediately.
Some allergies strike at
particular breeds of dogs. An
example is “collie nose”,
medically called nasal solar
dermatitis, an inflammation of
the nose aggravated by
repeated pawing and exposure
to sunlight.
Collie nose normally strikes
only collies, Shetland sheep
dogs and mongrels having
Shetland or collie blood. Signs
of this allergy in addition to
inflammation - include bleed
ing and loss of hair around the
nose.
Allergies are more prevalent
during the summer and fall. As
with other skin problems, there
is not much you can do about it
yourself, though you can
attempt to relieve your dog’s
discomfort with calamine
lotion or mineral oil.
Effective treatment should
be left to your veterinarian.
Dr. Minor regrets that he is
unable to personally answer
letters from pet owners. He
suggests that readers consult
their own veterinarians when
their pets have problems.
BUYING KNITS
When buying knits, keep
these tips in mind from Margie
Mclntyre, home economist
with the University of Georgia
Cooperative Extension Service.
Firm, compact knits wear
better than those that are loose
and open. A double knit holds
shape better than a single or
plain knit. For pants, choose
compact knits—they won’t bag
or sag.
