4,469 Phones
Are Now
In Jackson
Jackson, and their fellow
citizens throughout Georgia
and the United States continue
to use the telephone more than
any people around the world,
according to Southern Bell
Manager, Wes C. Jeffries.
“In 1971, U. S. residents
increased their calling by 15
per cent and had a yearly
average of 830 phone conversa
tions per person,” he added.
‘They were followed by
Canadian residents, with 781
conversations a person, and
residents of Sweden, with 687 a
person.”
The statistics he quoted are
in ‘The World’s Telephones,”
a booklet published annually
by AT&T’s Long Lines Depart
ment, the Bell System’s
Interstate and International
Operating Unit. The publica
tion gives details about
telephones and their world
wide use. Because it takes a
year to compile statistics,
figures reflect the status as of
January 1, 1972.
‘There were 2,192,552 South
ern Bell telephones in Georgia
at the beginning of 1972 and
4,469 of these phones were
located here in Jackson,” he
said. ‘This compares with
2,413,882 Southern Bell phones
in the state at the end of 1972.”
As in past years, the booklet
indicated substantial growth
has taken place in the world’s
telephone network during 1971.
For the 17thyear the number of
telephones has increased more
than six per cent, bringing the
total telephones in the world to
291 million.
The U. S. is the country with
the largest number of phones -
125.1 million, an increase of
more than four per cent over
the previous year. Japan is
second with 29.8 million and the
United Kingdom is third with
16.1 million.
The number of countries with
more than a half million
telephones has reached 38, with
Bulgaria the latest addition to
the roll. Of the 19 cities in the
world with more than one
million telephones, eight are in
the U. S.
More than 98 percent of the
world’s telephones connect
with the Bell System’s phones.
U. S. callers can reach 100
percent of the phones in such
faraway places as Burundi
and Botswana in Africa and
Wake Island, Pitcairn Island
and Tonga in Oceania.
Washington, D. C., could be
called the world’s telephone
capital. There are 60 tele
phones for every 100 persons in
the nation but the number of
phones in the nation’s capital
outnumbers the residents. For
every 100 persons there are 123
phones. The nation’s largest
city, New York, has 74 per 100
persons.
These figures compare with
51 per 100 persons in London;
30 in Athens; 24 in Rome; 11 in
Mexico City and three in
Managua, (prior to the recent
earthquake which ripped this
city).
Considering that Iceland has
only 37 telephones for every 100
persons, it’s a talkative nation.
Each person there has an
average of 639 conversations a
year, making Iceland the
fourth in the world.
