Tips For Food Shoppers
In setting up a food budget,
the amount you spend depends
on how well the family likes to
eat. According to the Bureau of
Labor Statistics model bud
gets, a weekly food bill for a
family of four (including two
school age children), for
example, might range from
$33.00 for a low cost plan to
$42.00 for a moderate scheme,
to $51.00 for a liberal budget.
The best time to shop is when
you are not in a hurry, the
stores are uncrowded and food
supplies are plentiful. Some
general rules to keep in mind
include:
1. Read labels - to check
information, number serv
ings, size servings.
2. Use unit pricing offered in
many stores.
3. Try store brands - some
times these are less
expensive.
4. Buy larger sizes - only if
you can use it before
spoiling.
5. Select foods according to
use. For instance, whole
canned vegetables are not
necessary if they are going
into a soup.
6. Use cents-off coupons -but
only if the brand and size is
really a good buy.
7. Buy according to season.
In-season foods are usually
more plentiful and econom
ical.
8. Avoid “convenience” foods
- especially fancy packs
which have butter sauces
added, which you could add
to less cost. Compare
* prices on items such as pre
sugared cereals, cottage
cheese with chives or pine
apple, etc.
9. At check-out be sure items
are rung up correctly.
Every one can make a
mistake.
Meat makes up one-third of
your food budget. Costs per
serving is what counts, not cost
per pound, since some cuts or
types of meat have more waste
than others.
Buy meat on special. Watch
ads.
Buy lower grades. Budget
cuts are cheaper but just as
nutritious. They may require a
longer preparation time.
Be your own butcher. Whole
chickens are usually cheaper
than parts.
Try variety meats. Such as
organ meats. These are
sometimes cheaper than ham
burger and are excellent
sources of important nutrients.
Use meat substitutes. Fresh
seafood often is a good buy
when supplies are plentiful.
Use some dried beans and peas
and cheeses.
