FARM LABOR
Only about five percent of
our labor is needed for agri
cultural production. This is a
very different situation from
other parts of the world. In
some parts of Europe, any
where from 10 to 30 percent
of the population is involved in
agriculture. In Latin America,
the figure is as high as 70
percent. It is even higher in
parts of Asia.
Timely Tips
For Farm And
Home Owners
WHEN TO PRUNE
One of the more frequent
questions asked me since I
have been in Butts County is
when should I prune my
shrubbery?
Some homeowners believe
that shrubs may be pruned
only during the winter. This is
not true. Many shrubs need
light, periodic pruning
throughout the growing season.
Do not hesitate to cut out tall,
unsightly limbs while they are
growing.
By pinching out the tips of
tender new growth you may
stimulate growth of the side
limbs and lessen long, upward
growth.
Prune spring flowering
shrubs soon after they bloom so
as not to affect next year’s
flowering. A good time to do
any severe pruning is just
before growth begins. Plants
are better able to withstand the
shock of heavy pruning at this
time.
Heavy pruning should not be
done in the late summer or
early fall. New growth as a
result of pruning in August and
September is often killed.
If you would like additional
information on pruning certain
types of shrubs, I’ll be happy to
furnish this information. Just
call 775-2601 for this service.
READ THE TAG
You can’t evaluate a book by
its cover nor can you tell what
is in a seed by looking at it.
However, if you read the tag on
the bag you will know exactly
what you are buying. State law
requires that all seed offered
for sale must be labeled with
an analysis tag revealing the
kind, of seed, germination,
purity, lot number, date of test,
and certain other information.
Also, seed laws require that
seed treated with a poisonous
material be labeled with a
separate tag, which must have
the word POISON printed on it
in large red letters. Since seeds
are often consumed by live
stock, poultry and even
humans, the importance of this
tag is obvious.
It is a wise practice to always
read over the seed tag to better
know what you are buying.
