Rome Nuptials April
7th United Miss Dorsey

The marriage of Miss Evelyn
Jacqueline Dorsey of Route 4,
Chulio Hills, Rome, the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John
L. Dorsey, Jr. of Indianapolis,
Indiana, and Mrs. Evelyn H.
Dorsey of Detroit, Michigan to
Charles Jerome Lawson, the
son of Mr. and Mrs. James C.
Lawson, Sr. of Jackson, was
solemnized Saturday, April
7th, at six o’clock in the
evening. The sanctuary of the
Greater Mount Calvary Baptist
Church was the setting with the
Rev. Mr. Eugene H. Mitchell
officiating the double ring
ceremony.
Mr. Charles W. Aycock
rendered the nuptial organ
music, “My Heart Ever
Faithful,” Bach; “Jesu, Joy of
Man Desiring,” Bach; “Ave
Maria,” Shubert; “I Love
ITiee,” Grieg; “Be Thou With
Me,” Bach; “0 Promise Me,”
DeKoven. Mrs. Imogene Dor
sey Saunders sang “Whither
TTiou Goest” and “The Lord’s
Prayer,” Mallotte.
The altar was adorned with
lighted tapers in wrought iron
candelabras entwined with ivy.
Hie family pews were desig
nated by white satin bows and
greenery.
Mr. Winston Lawson, brother
of the groom, served as best
man. Groomsmen were Arthur
Lawson, James C. Lawson, Jr.
and Nathaniel Lawson, of
Jackson; Cecil Lawson, At
lanta; June Lawson, Youngs
town, Ohio, all brothers of the
groom, and Rev. Mr. Calhoun
Sims of Toccoa, cousin of the
groom, served honorarily for
the groom’s older brother,
SHCS Edward P. Price, who is
stationed in Guam in the U. S.
Navy. Ushers were Ernest
Gordon, Troy McCrory, Jr.,
cousin of the bride, Hubert
Price and David Sims. Aldous
Finley, cousin of the bride,
served as ringbearer.
Miss Elva Kinnebrew of
Atlanta was maid of honor.
Bridesmaids were Miss Paula
Jean Conyers of Victoria,
Virginia, cousin of the bride;
Miss Gwendolyn Lockley,
Washington, D. C.; Miss
Frances Huggins, Columbus,
Ohio; Miss Virginia Lawson,
sister of the groom, Jackson,
Georgia; Miss Freda Malone of
Savannah, and Miss Esther
Schultz of Rome. They were
attired in floor length gowns of
powder blue chiffon over
taffeta and featured white
Venice lace trim with blue
satin inset at the delicately
ruffled standing collar. The
bodice and sleeve caps were of
a shirred chiffon with the softly
gathered skirt flowing from the
lace trimmed empire waist
line. Headpieces were deli
cately looped satin bows with
silk flowers centered with a
jewel. They carried loose hand
bouquets of blue Margarite
daisies, baby bridesmaid, pink
roses, miniature pink carna
tions and baby’s breath, tied
with blue streamers.
Little Miss Sandy Lawson,
niece of the groom, served as
flower girl. She wore a pink
formal gown patterned similar
to the bridesmaids’ gowns, and
carried a white wicker basket
filled with spring petals of
mixed colors.
The bride was given in
marriage by her father and
honorarily by her paternal
grandfather, Rev. Mr. John L.
Dorsey, Sr. She wore an
elegant formal model of chiffon
over taffeta with re-embroid
ered Alencon lace at the bodice
and topping the full layered
sleeves. Butterfly bows and
seed pearls adorned the center
bodice. The sweeping train fell
and gracefully gathered from
the shoulder that enriched a
cluster of lace appliques and
seed pearls. The Camelot
headpiece was encrusted with
re-embroidered Alencon lace
petals, teardrop pearls and
seed pearls. The English
illusion cascaded to elbow
length from the crown. She
carried a cascade bouquet of
white butterfly roses and
baby’s breath centered with
pink cymbidium orchids
placed on a white Bible, a gift
from her paternal grand

Following the wedding cere
mony, the bride’s parents
entertained with a beautiful
reception in the ballroom of the
Ramada Inn. In lieu of a
receiving line, Mrs. Evelyn
Harris Dorsey, Mrs. John L.
Dorsey, Jr., Mrs. Imogene
Saunders and Mrs. Mary
Dorsey Conyers served as
hostesses.
Mrs. Jo Ann Williams
registered guests at the door.
Mrs. Ender Price served at the
punch bowl. The bride’s cake
was served by Miss Verlez J.
White and the groom’s cake
was served by Mrs. Linda
Washington. Miss Cynthia D.
Hunter and Miss Arlecia L.
Lawson passed out souvenirs.
The bride’s table was
covered with a pink linen cloth
and a Chantilly lace overlay. It
held a four-tiered wedding
cake separated with Grecian
columns, cupids, and insets of
pink carnations topped with a
miniature arrangement of
spring flowers.
The groom’s table was
similar to that of the bride’s
table and held an arrangement
of spring flowers around a
double heart-shaped chocolate
cake.
Hie refreshment table held
silver candelabras, pink roses
and carnations. A silver punch
bowl filled with fruited punch
was centered on the table. A
second refreshment table,
decorated with silver candle
abras, pink roses and carna
tions, held a variety of hors
d’oeuvres, fingertip sand
wiches, cocktail sausages,
cheese puffs, mints and mixed
nuts.
Mr. Michael Pembleton
rendered nuptial music at the
organ during the reception.
For her wedding trip, the
bride chose a light blue
Eisenhower style jacketed
dress. She accented her dress
with accessories of spring
fabrics of beige and brown. She
wore a pink Cymbidium orchid
corsage.
Upon returning from Hawaii,
the couple will reside in
Chester, Pennsylvania.

of Flovilla announce the birth
of a daughter, Ruby Marie, on
Tuesday, April 17th, at Jasper
Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Davis
is remembered as the former
Patricia Martin of Jackson.

daughter, Jane Lee, to Dannie
Gean Miller, son of Mr. and
Mrs. A. 0. Miller, Sr. of
Jackson.
The bride-elect is the
granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs.
E. G. Lee of Huntsville,
Alabama and Mr. and Mrs.
Grundy Cope, also of Hunts
ville.
Miss Cope is a 1972 graduate
of Forest Park Senior High.
She is employed as a secretary
by A Construction Company.
The future bride-groom is the
grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Cupp of Jackson and Mr. and
Mrs. L. J. Miller of Branford,
Florida.
Miller is a PFC in the U. S.
Army and is now stationed at
Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
The wedding will be June 9th
at 3 p.m. at the Mt. Vernon
Baptist Church in Jackson.

B&PW Club
Jane Powell was installed as
president of the Jackson
B&PW Club Monday evening at
the dinner meeting of the club
at the Jackson Club House.
Other officers installed include
Mary Ann Stevenson, Ist vice
president; Elizabeth McMich
ael, 2nd vice president;
Kathleen Cartwright, record
ing secretary; Helen Spencer,
corresponding secretary; and
Pat Peek, treasurer.
Gladys Wilson installed the
new officers, using the im
pressive Pine Tree Installation
Service which she wrote
several years ago. Tliis service
has been used on several
occasions, once by the Georgia
Federation. As each officer
was installed Mrs. Wilson
presented the president with a

installing officers followed by
the presentation of Jewels and
gifts to the Past Junior Matron
and Patron.
Announcements were made
of other meetings and the
meeting closed with the
Mizpah Benediction.
The Chapter Room was
beautifully decorated in rain
bow colors and orchids, the
colors and flowers of the
Worthy Matron as well as the
dining room where delicious
refreshments of party sand
wiches, cakes, nuts, mints and
punch were served.
CARD OF THANKS
I would like to thank all my
friends and family who
remembered me while I was in
the hospital and since return
ing home. The cards, flowers,
visits, calls and other expres
sirns of kindness, including
your prayers, helped me more
than you can ever know. I am
especially grateful to my
doctors and to the nurses and
orderlies of DeKalb General
Hospital and to my pastor,
Rev. Billy Floyd. May God

Imogene Leverette, outgoing
president, thanked the mem
bers for their cooperation
during her term of office and
pinned the President’s Pin on
the incoming president. Mrs.
Powell, on behalf of the club,
presented Mrs. Leverette a
hand-painted china cake plate.
Recognition was paid Nancy
Houghtaling and Annadawn
Edwards, both STAR Teachers
at their respective schools, for
their dedication to the teaching
profession, youth, community,
and club. Mary Will Hearn
praised Mrs. Houghtaling,
while Maurine Shields paid
tribute to Mrs. Edwards.

business meeting for May Ist
at 7:30 o’clock at the
community room of the C&S
Bank of Jackson.
Mrs. Beckham
Died In
Atlanta
Mrs. John Henry Beckham of
917 Oakdale Road, NE,
Atlanta, died April 20th
following a long period of
declining health.
The former Miss Florence
Watkins, she was the daughter
of the late Mr. Paschal Rabon
Watkins and Mrs. Annie Jane
Hammond Watkins of Jackson.
Upon graduation from Jack
son High School Mrs. Beckham
attended and graduated from
Wesleyan College. She was a
member of Grace Methodist
Church, the Atlanta Chapter of
the United Daughters of the
Confederacy, the Joseph Ha
bersham Chapter of the
Daughters of the American
Revolution. She was also a
member of the 1812s, the
Colonial Dames, the Dames
Court of Honor and the Magna
Charta Society.
Funeral services were held
in Atlanta Saturday afternoon
April 21st, at three o’clock
from H. M. Patterson & Sons,
Spring Hill. Dr. W. I. Howell
and Rev. Sam H. Coker
officiated with interment in
Westview Cemetery.
Mrs. Beckham is survived by
a daughter, Mrs. Don E. Woods
of Atlanta; two sisters, Mrs.
Hillyer S. Smith, Sr. and Mrs.
P. R. Kimbrough, both of
Atlanta; two nieces and a
nephew. One of her nieces is
Miss Anne Watkins who had
lived with Mrs. Beckham in her
home in Atlanta for 30 years.
