BRENDA WILLIAMSON
Easter Sunrise Service
at Indian Springs State Park
Pavilion was widely attended
by Butts countians Sunday
morning who joined together to
share the Good News about
their Risen Saviour. A chal
lenging Easter message was
brought by Rev. Don Folsom of
the First Baptist Church in
Jackson with many of the
county’s religious leaders
taking part on the pro
gram ... . The first flowers of
the season have started to
bloom around the Confederate
Monument on the Courthouse
lawn. Tulips have been
blooming tall and stately the
past week or so in colors of red
in varying shades. The
Cherokee Garden Club takes on
the responsibility of the
monument each year and its
members are to be com
mended for their efforts to
beautify the town square ....
Butts County gardeners have
been hampered by the heavy
rainfall of late and have been
unable to plant because of the
wet ground. Some have
managed to get a garden spot
plowed and are in the process
of planting fruits and vege
tables to be enjoyed during the
summer. Homemakers will be
busy during the summer
months freezing the garden
delicacies for enjoyment dur
ing the winter months to
come .... The Jenkinsburg
Garden Club is sponsoring
their annual Iris tour Saturday,
April 28th, at several gardens
in the Jenkinsburg area. The
tour is looked forward to by Iris
lovers of the county and will
begin at two O’clock and
continue until five. Those
touring the grounds expect to
see some of the prettiest Iris
this section has and will view
many species and colors. The
tour will begin at the gardens
of Mrs. Taylor Patrick on the
Griffin Highway. Mrs. Patrick
is known far and wide for her
many varieties of Iris and
people often drive many miles
to view her gardens .... As
graduation day approaches the
Seniors at Jackson High School
are enjoying the usual Senior
privileges that come prior to
the end of their 12 years of
study. Thursday of last week
was Senior Day at Jackson
High School with Seniors
allowed to be teachers for a
day. They assumed the duties
of teaching at Jackson Pri
mary School, Henderson
Junior High and Jackson High
School and were allowed to
have complete charge of the
pupils and class activities.
Many other activities will be
carried out between now and
May 31st, THE day ... . Take
a few minutes of your time and
drive out Highway 16 toward
Griffin to see the beautiful
Grancy Gray Beard in the front
yard of the home of Mr. and
Mrs. W. Ronnie Wells. The tree
was apparently at its peak
during the Easter weekend but
Ronnie tells me it usually
blooms three to three and one
half weeks. The large tree is of
the tame variety and does not
have berries and Ronnie said
Monday one could stand almost
anywhere in their yard and
smell the fragrant aroma of the
tree.
