REV. A. L. PRICE, PASTOR
SECOND BAPTIST CHURCH
LOVE THAT
PASSES KNOWLEDGE
“that ye . . . may be able to
comprehend with all saints
what is the breadth, and
length, and depth, and height,
and to know the love of Christ,
which passeth knowledge.”
(Eph 3:17-19).
This is a portion of Paul’s
prayer for the Ephesian
church. He prayed that (1)
They would be strengthened
with might by the Spirit (2)
That Christ would dwell in
their hearts by faith (3) That
they would be rooted and
grounded in love.
It is the Christian’s business
to fix our thoughts on the love
of Christ. We readily acknow
ledge that the love of Christ
cannot be fully measured but
we can measure it to the extent
of our limited ability. I suppose
we could call this measuring
the measureless. Let’s take a
brief look at the love of Christ.
1. Breadth -- This is
opposite to narrowness. There
is nothing narrow or limited in
the love of Christ. One of Paul’s
main objectives was to make
this known. God had revealed
to Paul the great mystery of
the Church. Gentiles and Jews
should be fellow-heirs and
partakers of the same grace
(Eph 3:3-6; Col 1:26,27). The
Jewish belief in God’s love was
that it embraced only the
nation of Israel, and made no
provision for the Gentile
nations. Contrary to the
narrowness of this belief, the
love of Christ recognizes no
boundaries. It’s universal and
no race or culture is outside the
scope of the love of God.
2. Length - How long has
God loved? How long will this
love last? Take a trip up to
Golgotha’s hill where Jesus
was crucified and lode back
thru the ages. There you will
find prophecy, sacrifices, types
and shadows. Then go on to the
Garden of Eden where we find
God’s love and mercy (Gen
3:15, 21). Then go beyond Eden
as the love of Christ antidates
creation (2Tim I:9,Titus 1:2; I
Peter 1:18-20). The love of
Christ reaches from eternity
thru eternity. There is no end.
Depth - Just how far down
did Christ have to reach to pull
us out of the pit. All have
sinned and come short of the
glory of God. Using the
holiness of God as the standard
of perfection, just how far are
sinners below that level? The
depth of man’s ruin can be seen
in the utter inability to save
himself. Salvation is of the
Lord and totally of the Lord.
The love of Christ has raised us
even from the pits of hell
(Psalm 40:2). This love will
eventually raise our bodies
from the darkness of the grave
and give us bodies like unto the
resurrected body of our Lord
(Col 3:4; 1 John 3:2).
Height -- The love of Christ
has such depth that it raises the
saved ones high. How great it is
for Christ to make us children
of God by regeneration and
adoption. In these terms
consider the height of His love.
The saints are so highly
exalted that even angels are
appointed to minister to ones
whoare heirs of salvation (Heb
1:14). Eventually the believer
will be raised to heaven itself
into the very presence of God.
When we reach that heavenly
city the magnitude of what
Christ has done for us will
forever and forever prove the
unmeasurable height of His
love. Love gives of itself
unselfishly and this is what
Christ has done for us. Praise
the Lord.

Jackson Mayor Robert F.
Mackey has proclaimed Fri
day, June Ist, as Mrs. Myrtice

people of Jackson to express
proper appreciation to her for
the wonderful job she has done
for 23 years as manager of the
Jackson High and Elementary
Schools Lunchroom.
Mrs. Moore will retire at the
end of the school year after her
long years of service. In
reminiscing about her experi
ences, Mrs. Moore recalled
that she started off with about
350 students and now is feeding
1,200. She has taken five
courses in lunchroom manage
ment that the state offered and
is regretful over giving up her
position, saying, “I enjoyed it a
lot and hate to give it up but I
must do so. It used to be my life
and for years it was all I lived
for.”
Mrs. Moore said that she has
no future plans other than to
“relax and enjoy life.” Mrs.
Moore has five children and
said that at one time she had
nine grandchildren in school
and was serving them lunch.
In his proclamation, Mayor

The cap . . . the diploma . . . symbols of achievement.
They mark the end of one way of life and imply the begin
ning of another.
But ten years from now, where will this diploma be and
what will it mean? Will it be packed away in an attic trunk
. . . framed on the wall of a room or office? Will it have been
thrown out by accident or cast into a seldom-noticed corner ?
And what of the hopes and dreams that go with it? What
will have happened to them ?
Who knows? There is no set answer to life, no single
solution to all its problems. Nor can anyone live life alone.
Whether your diploma is still crisp or has gotten dusty—
whether your dreams are still bright or have become slight
ly tarnished —forget about personal ambition as the sole
answer to everything. Think of your own immortal soul.
Go to church, and talk to God about it, through prayer.

The Living Is Easy
The approach of summer reluctantly
causes us to issue a word of caution to our
neighbors based on the tragic experiences
of past years. MOTHERS: Remember that
small children rarely realize the danger
that lurks beyond the water’s edge as they
cavort happily in the summer sun.
FATHERS: remember that you cannot
rely on the other fellow’s reflexes as mil
lions of vacationers take to the road all
those happy children bobbing up and down
in the back seat depend on you for their
future. May you all enjoy the summer in
health and happiness.
