Of Town ;
BY
BRENDA WILLIAMSON;
One hundred and twenty nine
Jackson High seniors will
march down to receive their
diplomas tonight and in doing
so will start anew journey in
life. A number of them have
made plans to further their
education at an institution of
higher learning while many
will begin working full time.
Qapid’s arrow has pierced the
hearts of a few who plan to
marry immediately after
graduation. Whatever their
choice, we congratulate each of
them and wish them the very
best for the future .... Time
marches on and the retirement
of two well known City of
Jackson employees will bring
toa close a combined total of 81
years of service to the city. The
retirement of E. B. Perdue and
J. Howard Rooks will leave :
hard to fill void in the Wate
Department and Light Depart
ment and the two men will be
greatly missed by their
co-workers. Mr. Rooks has
worked for the city since 1916
and is often called upon by
those younger than he to
remember “way back when.”
He plans to take life easy and
"enjoy his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.” Ballard
Perdue joined the ranks of the
City of Jackson in April of 1942
and has been serving as
superintendent of the water
department. He plans to catch
up on a lot of chores around the
house and enjoy a life of leisure
also. Their retirement will be
effective June 30th and we
congratulate both these men
upon their well deserved
retirement .... Mrs. Ron
Wade called the office early
Thursday morning quite dis
traught over the fact that there
are people in the county who
are inhumane enough to poison
dogs. Their family dog, a
valuable bird dog, was poi
soned Wednesday evening but
luckily enough they discovered
Rex in time to rush him to the
Veterinarian’s office where it
was determined he had been
the unsuspecting victim of
strychnine poisoning. Dr. Mit
chell believes the dog had been
poisoned about 30 minutes
earlier but as of this writing
had pulled the beloved dog
through its ordeal.... Speak
ing erf dogs, Mrs. M. R. Towner
called last week and inquired if
we knew of anyone who would
like to give a German Shepherd
dog a good home. The pet dog is
a handsome dog, according to
Mrs. Towner, and is very good
with children as well as being a
good watchdog. She said they
had two dogs and didn’t mind
keeping both of them but that
the price of dog food has gone
out of reach and they just
cannot afford to keep up two
big dogs. Those interested in
the dog and only those who are
willing to give it a good home
should get in touch with Mrs.
Towner for further informa
tion .... It’s almost here! The
time is near at hand. Residents
are counting the weeks and
days until the 1973 session of
Indian Springs Holiness Camp
Meeting will open in August.
Those who spend the summer
months at the camp ground are
beginning to arrive and are
being welcomed with open
arms by county residents. This
year’s slate of speakers is
anticipated to be an excellent
one. Harold Loman, James
Lentz and Lawrence Coleman
are three greats that are
widely known with the ten day
meeting expected to draw
throngs from over the state and
nation. We are indeed for
tunate here in Butts County to
have the camp ground so close
at hand.
