Home Improvement Outlay
Runs High in Butts County
Special to The
Progress- Argus
NEW YORK, May 26 - The
amount of money that home
owners in Butts County are
spending per year for altera
tions, repairs, improvements
and maintenance of their
property is running into big
figures.
As in other parts of the
country, local homeowners are
in a clean-up, paint-up and
fixup mood.
Such is the case all over,
according to the Department of
Commerce. It says “the
hardware and paint stores
know it and the Census
Bureau’s statistics confirm it.”
Locally, an estimated
$1,030,000 went for such
purposes in the past year,
based upon government re
ports showing average outlays
per housing unit in the regional
area.
It represents an average
expenditure in the area of $2Bl
per unit. Nationally, the outlay
was about $341.
Those were the averages.
Some Butts County home
owners spent considerably
more than the local figure and
some a great deal less since
only a small proportion of them
undertake major improve
ments in any one year.
The principal expenditure, in

McMichael’s son-in-law, Mr.

accident last week, is some
improved. Mr. and Mrs. B. T.
McMichael and Mrs. Frank
Ogletree had Sunday dinner
with Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Duke
in Jackson.
This reporter and Mr. Grier
had as their guests over the
weekend two of their grand
daughters, Shawn and Melinda
Grier, from Tucker.
Mr. and Mrs. Dan Hoard and
Danny Hoard spent several
days in Hollywood, Fla.
attending the graduation of Ed
Hoard who received his
Masters from Florida Bible
College. On May 20th they
attended the ordination cere
mony for Ed at Margate
Church where Ed has been
minister of music for the past
year. They all returned home
on Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Joel Crane
were given a fish fry by the
Taylors and McMichaels to
celebrate their 49th wedding
anniversary last Wednesday.
Mr. and Mrs. Joel Crane had as
their weekend guest their
grandson, Scott Fletcher, from
Locust Grove and their Sunday
dinner guests were Mr. and
Mrs. Jerry Crane and family
from Warner Robins and Mr.
and Mrs. Danny Hoard and
Barrett.
Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Darrow
and Mrs. Rita Stewart had as
their weekend guests, Mr. and
Mrs. J. C. Watson, from
Jacksonville, Fla. They are
Mr. Darrow’s and Mrs.
Stewart’s brother and wife.
The Darrows had as their
Sunday guests Mr. and Mrs.
Joe Cash and family and Billy
Crain and family from Warner
Robins.
Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Clifton
had as their Sunday guests Mr.
Frank C. Clifton and family
from Morrow. Mr. Clifton is not
feeling well this past week and
has been in severe pain, he
states.
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard
Gregory had as their Sunday
guests Mr. and Mrs. George
Wilks from Forsyth.
Mrs. Ruby Spangler is in St.
Joseph Infirmary. We wish her
a speedy recovery.
The Antique Car Club
meeting at the Elder Hotel last
weekend was a success and we
surely enjoyed looking over the
cars. There were several that
brought back memories to Mr.
Grier and me. The ones with
the rumble seats especially, as
this was our speed back in 1928.
Mr. and Mrs. Pope Moncrief
general, was for additions,
alterations and replacements.
They accounted for nearly 62
percent of the total in the past
year, the Commerce Depart
ment finds.
The other 38 percent went for
maintenance and general re
pairs. In this category,
painting was the biggest item.
It accounted for almost half the
amount spent. Next in order
were plumbing, roofing, heat
ing and air conditioning.
Total outlays in the United
States in 1972 for the upkeep
and improvement of residen
tial properties came to
approximately $17.5 billion,
according to government fig
ures. This was $1.2 billion more
than in the previous year.
Much of the added cost was
due to higher prices for
services and materials.
Because of the continuing
shortage of electricians, car
penters, plumbers and other
mechanics, and because of the
growing availability of easy-to
install equipment, local home
owners have been encouraged
to tackle many of the repair
and alteration jobs themselves.
Asa result, a large part of
the $1,030,000 spent last year on
fixing up Butts .County homes
went to local merchants selling
building supplies and equip
ment.
and Mrs. Roy Moon are in
Jacksonville, Fla. with Mrs.
Moncrief’s brother, Clarence
Moon, who had a heart attack
last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Byron Britt
attended the Britt reunion at
Indian Springs State Park.
This reunion is the fourth
Sunday in May every year and
has been for over 25 years.
There were about 25 members
of the Britt family that
attended.
