Of Town
BY
BRENDA WILLIAMSON
School’s out and kids
everywhere are enjoying free
dom from school and “book
learning.” Many have already
begun working at their
summer jobs while others are
taking life easy. College
students from this area are
arriving home to spend the
summer months with their
parents with many working
during their summer break.
When fall arrives they will
return to school relaxed and
anew eager to tackle their
studies with new vigor. Many
of the students in this area will
attend summer camps of one
kind or another and will enjoy
swimming, hiking, picnicking,
etc. during the summer
months .... We are quite
proud of the Junior Choir at our
church. They have won top
place honors by being named
the best junior choir the
Church of the Nazarene has in
the state of Georgia. Directed
by Rev. and Mrs. Lon Hadwin,
the youthful choir members
have won competition at
several levels before compet
ing Saturday at Norman Park
against the junior choir from
Mt. Olive Church of the
Nazarene. The choir members
have done well in their singing
and were colorful in their
outfits of red and white. It is
hoped the choir will be larger
and even better next year for
the competition is anticipated
to be even stiffer .... Many
residents of this area look
forward each summer to fresh
fruits and vegetables grown in
this area. Peaches and apples
are always consumed with
much enjoyment, many resi
dents going to the orchards,
picking their fruit and return
ing home to process and freeze
it for use during the winter
months. Teens delight in
forming groups and going plum
pickin’, raiding bushes along
side country roads with great
excitement.... The lilies of
this area are bursting into
bloom and the many colors and
varieties are always a source
of amazement to passersby.
Several “green thumb” owners
in this area take pride in their
lily gardens and are constantly
searching for new species to
plant. The driveway of Mrs.
Otis Weaver always gets
prettier each year and is
admired and enjoyed by
onlookers. Others in this area
nurture their lilies and grow
them with great enthus
iasm .... Now that Butts
County has officially been
“caught up” in the Atlanta
Metro area, local residents
have been asking many
questions regarding the possi
bilities of our future. Perhaps
the most often asked question
has been “What’s going to
happen to our taxes now?”
This along with other questions
that have formed can only be
answered as time passes ....
Time nears for the Atlanta
Billy Graham Crusade as Butts
countians make plans to attend
at least one of the services.
Many local persons are
undergoing training sessions to
serve as counselors during the
crusade while others will sing
in the huge choir or serve as
ushers. It will be a much
heralded event and great
crowds are expected to throng
to the crusade at each service.
Ty Cobb
Baseball
Only one game was played
last week in the Ty Cobb
League. In that game the
Superior Cleaners Tigers beat
Beckham’s Yankees 18-12.
Pitchers for the Tigers were
Dickie Meredith, J. D. Mealey
and Joey Daniels. Hitters were
Joey Daniels and Andrea
Rodriguez with one single
each, J. D. Mealey with a triple
and Timmy Patterson with a
triple and a single.
Pitching for the Yankees
were Mike Pippin, Joe White
and Scott Folsom. Hitters were
Scott Folsom with a double and
a single, Alan Folsom with a
double and a triple, and Bryan
Miller with a single.
The second game on Monday
night was called after one
inning because of lightning.
Both games on Thursday were
postponed because of the
Jackson High School gradua
tion.
