August is here and that
means only a few short weeks
are left before football.
Football fans in Butts County,
particularly Mr. Jones, are
counting the days before the
first kick-off to open the 1973
season. The Jackson Red
Devils are hard at work
preparing for the opening
kick-off on The Hill and will
attend football camp in the
next few days .... Apparently
many people are going to be
“left in the dark’’ when they
are stopped or pulled over by
highway patrolmen during a
downpour of rain. A law was
passed earlier in the year
which requires Georgia drivers
to turn on their headlights at
the first drop of rain or else
suffer the consequences of
being stopped. Apparently
many people in this area are
not aware of the law since
during recent rains we met
numerous vehicles without
headlights on. The new law has
been publicized through all
mass media and lawmen state
there will be no leniency
permitted to those who violate
the law. Even the excuse of not
knowing about the law will not
be accepted, they state.
Perhaps it would be wise for
you to proclaim the law to your
friends and relatives if they
aren’t aware of it... . Walk
ing is a habit that many people
acquire and more should
acquire for both health and
exercise. For some months
now I have watched a group of
ladies walking daily up Third
Street and having a good time.
Becoming somewhat curious
as to their purpose I called
upon one of the women I knew,
Mrs. Sam Smith, of East
Jackson to find out what was
going on. She said they walk
twice daily, once early in the
morning before it gets too hot
and again in the late afternoon
just before dark. Those who
know Mrs. Smith are aware of
her jovial nature and just
listening to her describe their
daily habit made one ready to
join them at a moment’s
notice. She said they start out
in "Pep”, walk up Third Street
to Indian Springs Street, back
down Indian Springs Street and
back to their East Jackson
homes. Presently enjoying the
daily trek are Mrs. Smith, Mrs.
Trudy Faulkner, Mrs. Lois
Byrd. Joining them for the
evening walk are Mrs. Annie
Lou Rosser and Mrs. Mary
Bedsole. Mrs. Smith stated
that others are welcome to join
them and several are “trying
to lose weight.” I’m sure the
ladies would agree that “if you
can’t join them, wave” as they
stroll by you .... The citizens
of Butts County can be quite
proud of their “new court
house” on the square of
Jackson. To say new would not
be underestimating it since it
has been going through a
complete renovation both in
side and out. The familiar
county landmark stands tall
and proud of the new office
decor as well as the sandblast
ing which has been done to the
outside. For the past couple of
weeks or so the workmen have
been at work on the steeple
portion of the government
building and reworked the
clock so that it is white with
black letters and is very
attractive. Now if they’ll just
get the clock in good running
order, all will be well.
