Rockdale Rocks Devils ;
Mary Persons Is Next
By SKIP BUTLER
That opening night game is
always tough!
Seems like someone would of
told Andy Crumbley. The
Jackson High senior tailback
busted a school record in first
quarter action with a 90 yard
kickoff return against triple A
Rockdale. Less than four
minutes later quarterback
John Morgan fired him a 6 yard
pass for Jackson’s final
touchdown.
The game ended with
Rockdale on top 26 - 12.
Many of the Red Devils
fought both ways, only getting
a breather at the half, or when
time was called. That’s the
way the game of football is
played at a small school. Head

END OF THE LINE - James Clark, No. 80, junior end, slams Mike Carlton, Rockdale
back, to the ground in action Friday night on Red Devil Hill as the Bulldogs defeated the Red Devils
26-12. Bryant Goggins, No. 52, arrives too late to block.
Timely Tips
For Farm And
Home Owners
MILLARD
BE SAFE WITH PESTICIDES
Farmers are reminded there
are a number of new pest
poisons around this year. If you
know how to use them you can
kill insects. If you don’t know
how to use them, you can kill
yourself or others. When it
comes to pest poison, what you
know is as important as what
you do.
Know what’s in the poison,
and know how to mix and apply
it. Know the ways it can poison
you or others, or even animals,
and know what to do if
accidental poisonings occur.
If you don’t know these
things, read the label on the
poison container, ask your
pesticide dealer, or contact
your local University of
Georgia Extension Service
office in the basement of the
Jackson Post Office.
Never guess with pesticides,
know the answer for sure.
SOYBEANS GEORGIA’S
NEW CASH CROP
Soybeans are rapidly grow
ing as a cash crop in Georgia
and in Butts County. According
to figures from University of
Georgia Cooperative Exten
sion Service, soybean acreage
in 1972 totaled 670,000 acres in
Georgia and 1,500 acres in
Butts County. This year, the
total is something like 925,000
acres in Georgia and 2,500
acres in Butts County.
Since 1963 the increase in
soybean acreage in Georgia is
approximately 1000 percent,
according to a soybean
specialist with the Extension
Coach Ron Wade said either
your wind builds up or
you . . .
Defensively the 1973 Red
Devils proved to be hard
hitting with a few record
grabbers in sight. The Red
Devils record for tackles is 14,
snatched by Calvin White in
1971. Sophomore guard Dale
White tackled 11 with 9 assists.
Sophomore guard Jimmy
Clemmons also hit 11, with 5
assists. Each player also
recovered a Rockdale fumble.
(Note these guys are only
sophomores.)
Veteran tackle Darrell Sum
mers totaled 9 tackles with 9
assists. Summers last year
recovered two fumbles against
this week’s opponent Mary
Persons which set a record.
Service.
This year there’ll be over 20
million bushels of soybeans
produced in Georgia compared
to around 10 million last year,
so producers should consider
on-farm storage of their
soybeans.
If for no other reason, during
the past 12 years there has
been an average increase of
over 40 cents per bushel for
beans sold at a time later than
at harvest. The latest informa
tion concerning on-farm stor
age of soybeans can be
obtained by calling 775-2601.
First Aid
Care At
Ga. Games
ATHENS, GA. - First aid
service at University of
Georgia home football games
will again combine the work of
volunteers and professionals
during the coming gridiron
season.
The service will include aid
teams strategically located
throughout Sanford Stadium
and at a booth staffed by Red
Cross volunteers.
Kathy Reed, chairman of the
Red Cross effort, said people
with chronic medical condi
tions that might require
treatment during a game
should report their conditions
and seat positions to volunteers
in the booth just inside the
main stadium gate under the
bridge.
“By knowing where potential
problems might arise, we feel
we will be able to give first aid
more promptly,” Reed said.
Another important feature of
the' service program is the
heart-lung resuscitation team,
established in 1968 and on hand
for all Athens games that year.
The first such service in the
South and one of the first in the
nation, the unit is staffed by
Athens hospital personnel,
including a cardiologist.
Each of the first aid services
at games will utilize staff from
the University Health Services,
Athens hospitals and Red Cross
volunteers.
THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, JACKSON, GEORGIA
The Devils lost by an extra
point 7 - 6.
Senior tackle Marvin Banks
who went both ways was cited
as playing an impressive
game.
Coach Wade and his staff
dressed out 33 players and 20 of
these had never played varsity
ball. Their fine performance
undoubtedly surprised many
fans.
The Red Devils travel to
Mary Persons Friday night
who last week whipped
Monticello 32 - 6. Come support
the Red Devils, kick off is 8
p.m.
Coach Wade said, “We gonna

ANDY CRUMBLEY SETS RECORD - Andy Crumbley, senior tailback, No. 46, is pictured above
returning a first quarter kick-off 90 yards for a touchdown against Rockdale County Friday night in
Jackson’s home opener. The touchdown run, in which he eluded practically the entire Bulldog team,
established anew Red Devil record. Convoying him to the promised land are Bernard Mayfield, No.
44, and Ray Thomas No. 50. About four minutes later Andy scored a second touchdown on a 6 yard
pass from John Morgan, quarterback. The Rockdale Bulldogs defeated the Devils 26-12.
