Rev. R. W. Jenkins, Pastor
Macedonia Baptist Church
“Hie greatest of these is
love” I Cor. 13:13
Before Henry Drummond
ever wrote his famous sermon,
The Greatest Thing in the
World, Pafil, the great apostle,
had declared it to be so.
He said that it supercedes
both faith and hope. These two
are * great and essential
qualities in the Christian life
and without them, one would
not get far. However, love is
the all enveloping quality that
must invade all of the Christian
teaching and the life of the
believer as well, if his life is to
produce any real good in this
world.
The love that Paul is talking
about in this 13th chapter of I
Corinthians is of a special kind.
It is more than romantic love
and friendship kind of love or
even more than parental love.
It is a self giving sacrificing
love, like the love that Christ
Jesus had for us when He went
to the cross to die for our sins.
This love goes beyoond the
reception of all other spiritual
gifts and must be coveted after
more than anything in the
Christian life.
This love never suggests that
one should do because of what
they have done. It never asks,
“What will I get out of it?” This
love never pushes itself. It
never seeks to justify itself by
gloating over the evil deeds of
others. Neither does it become
angry easily, but it has the
patience of Job.
The writer of this great
chapter holds this unselfish
love as the true ruling principle
of all that we do. He also calls
our attention to the fact that
this is the only thing that will
last through all eternity. Other
things will fail or pass away.
Faith and hope will come to be
sight and reality but love
continues forever.
Now it is the Spirit of Christ
living in the heart that can
produce this kind of love and
without a growing awareness
and development of this love
one does not have Christ. So we
can see how important it is to
know Christ and to allow his
love to possess us.
Auburn A
Point Pick
Over Vols
The first week the headliner
was U. C. L. A.-Nebraska . .
the second week, L. S.
U.-Colorado . . last week, it
was North Carolina State-Ne
braska . . and this week, the
national spotlight is on the
blockbuster between Okla
homa and Southern California.
They’re ranked 3rd and 4th in
that order in our top 20. The
Sooners have had a week off
since their impressive trounc
ing of Baylor in their season
opener, and the Trojans have
defeated Arkansas and Geor
gia Tech on successive
Saturdays. Both teams are
capable of such offensive
explosions, it should be a
tremendous show. Our pick is
possibly a surprise: Oklahoma
by nine points.
However, Nebraska is still
Number One this week,
challenged by runner-up Ala
bama . The Cornhuskers have a
little easier task this Saturday
than last as they play
Wisconsin. The Tide meets
Vanderbilt. And depending on
the outcome of Southern
Cal-Oklahoma, the two powers
could still be on top next week.
Nebraska will dump the
Badgers by 35, and Alabama
will top the Commodores by
- wow - 55 points!
An old nemesis faces
Bth-ranked Notre Dame. The
Boilermakers of Purdue,
thorns in the sides of the
Fighting Irish in past years,
meet the Irish in West
LaFayette. The Riveters are
much more of a darkhorse this
fall, but are still figured to be
an 18-point underdog to Notre
Dame.
The two powers in the Big
Ten, Michigan and Ohio State,
are rated sth and 7th
respectively in our national
rankings. The Buckeyes will
clip T. C. U. by 20 points, and
Mrs. Goodwin
Dies After
Long Illness
Mrs. Levia Peek Goodwin,
88, of Hilltop Nursing Home
and formerly of Jackson, died
Wednesday night, September
19th, at the Monroe County
Hospital following a long
period of declining health. She
had been a resident at Hilltop
for the past three years.
Born January 25, 1885 in
Henry County, she was the
daughter of the last Mr. A. J.
W. Peek and Mrs. Nancy
Thompson Peek, both of Henry
County. She was the widow of
Mr. Mack Goodwin and was a
member of the First Baptist
Church of Jackson and the
Order of the Eastern Star.
Funeral services were con
ducted Friday afternoon at
three o’clock from the chapel
of Haisten Funeral Home with
Rev. Don Folsom, pastor of
First Baptist Church, officia
ting. Interment was in Jackson
City Cemetery with Haisten
Funeral Home in charge of
arrangements.
Mrs. Goodwin is survived by
one daughter-in-law, Mrs. W.
P. Goodwin, of Stockbridge;
two grandsons, W. Mack
Goodwin of Ellenwood and
Harold Goodwin of Stock
bridge; one granddaughter,
Mrs. Patricia L. Holloway of
McDonough; 11 great-grand
children; one great-great
grandchild; several nieces and
nephews.
Pallbearers for Mrs. Good
win were Pliny Weaver, Mike
Allen, Ben Garland, Dr. B. F.
Parrish, Banks Weaver, Mer
rell Price.
Junior Class
Will Sell
Magazines
The junior Class of Jackson
High set plans for next fall’s
magazine subscription pro
gram during a recent meeting.
According to Kenny Nors
worthy, president of the
student group, the campaign
will start Sept. 13-27 and be
conducted through QSP, the
fund raising subsidiary of
Reader’s Digest Association,
Inc. The profits earned by
selling subscriptions will be
used for the 1974 Junior-Senior
Prom.
Students participating in the
the Wolverines are a heavy
35-point choice over Navy.
Miami, the big upsetter a
week ago, goes after Florida
State Saturday. The 12th-rated
Hurricanes will win by 25
points.
Three other members of the
Big 8 Conference are in the Top
20 again . . Oklahoma State is
a surprising 6th, lowa State is
13th, and Missouri is number
14. The Cowboys are favored
over Southern Illinois by 49
points . . the Cyclones will be
a 15-point winner over Ar
kansas, and Mizzou will take
North Carolina by sixteen.
In the Southeast Conference,
match-ups between conference
title contenders and national
powers occur almost weekly.
This Saturday, it’s Tennessee
against Auburn. Last fall, the
Tigers upset the Volunteers,
10-6, and this year - well, it
could be the same story.
Auburn is favored by just one
point.
