The first tinge of Fall struck
Jackson and Butts County last
week when citizens experi
enced much cooler tempera
tures in the early morning
hours. The thermometer drop
ped to the.midSO mark and
caused many residents to
magically pull from their
closet a jacket or sweater.
Those of us who prefer cold
weather welcomed with open
arms the cool temperatures
and look forward to more of the
same.... Also announcing
Fall’s appearance has been a
change in the color of many
leaves in this area. Autumn
colors of red and gold have
been noted in many yards and
a spectacular picture is
expected to be painted by
Nature within a matter of
weeks .... Scuppernong and
muscadine lovers of this area
have been enjoying Jthese two
fruits the last few weeks and
are savouring their delicious
taste. A few homemakers have
been preparing jelly for the
winter cupboards which will be
enjoyed during the long cold
days to come. Muscadine
lovers have been hiking
through the woods in search of
the favorite purple fruit while
those a little on the lazy side
and who prefer a sweeter taste
go to the nearest arbor in the
yard and consume scupper
nongs. Muscadine hunts were
infinitely more popular in days
past and “city slickers” and
teens of today haven’t enjoyed
embarking on a “hunt” for the
large succulent purple fruit
which is more often than not
found in tall trees and requires
more than a little effort to get
the pail fu11.... With Fall’s
arrival also comes hunting
season. Dove hunters have
already enjoyed participating
in several dove shoots, the dove
season opening some two
weeks ago. Deer hunters are
eagerly awaiting the month of
October and November when
bow and arrow and gun will be
used to hit their target and
providemeat for the winter. Of
regret to most hunters though
is that many persons have
taken advantage of the “beef
shortage” to poach deer and
killed many of the animals
before the legal hunting
season .... The Butts County
Fair will begin in two weeks
and those clubs and organiza
tions who will have booths and
exhibits are busy planning the
final details for the opening
night. Exhibits of all types,
canned goods, animals, food,
cotton candy and rides will be
enjoyed by young and old alike
each evening with many Butts
countians to come away at the
fair’s end with red, blue and
white ribbons in hand. The fair
is sponsored by the Exchange
Club each year and special
events will be held each
evening. Several fairs have
already been held and many
more to come within the next
few weeks ....

Showing
Improvement
Thomas Varner, 17, critical
ly injured in the car-truck
collision September 13th that
killed a Jackson High School
senior football player, Curtis
Smith, 16, and seriously
injured Thomas’ brother,
Gary, 14, is showing some
improvement at the Griffin-
Spalding County Hospital.
Thomas, driver of the car
that skidded across the median
near the intersection of
Highway 42 and 16 on East
Third Street, was charged with
driving too fast for conditions
and driving on the wrong side
of the street by the two City of
Jackson Policemen who invest
igated the accident, but no
warrant was taken for his
arrest as was erroneously
reported in the September 20th
issue of the Progress-Argus.
Lt. W. L. (Cotton) Vaughn of
the Jackson Police Depart
ment said that Thomas would
be given a copy of the charges
when he is released from the
hospital.
The Progress-Argus is glad
to make this correction.
