Talmadge Urges
Tougher Action
To Reduce Crime
ATLANTA, (GPS) The
best way to reduce crime in the
United States is through
“tougher laws, tougher law
enforcement, and courts that
will hand down tougher prison
sentences,” declared Geor
gia’s U.S. Sen. Herman E.
Talmadge in a speech to the
Cobb County Peace Officers
Association in Marietta.
“Law enforcement officials,
to whom we owe a tremendous
debt of gratitude, are under
standably frustrated in their
work,” he said. “We have in
recent years been pampering
criminals while neglecting
their victims’ rights to justice.
I am appalled that we have
come to a point where a person
can commit murder, be
convicted, and then be free on
parole in a few short years.
“Likewise, I am alarmed
that courtrooms in some parts
of the country seem to have put
in revolving doors for drug
peddlers. We see these pushers
of misery brought into court
and released almost before
their customers need their next

“It is my belief that the law
should be set down in more
definite terms if it isn’t plain
enough for a judge to
understand now. Notice should
be served to all that our society
has a code for living with one
another, and that we are
expected to abide by it or suffer
the consequences.”
Sen. Talmadge sponsored
legislation earlier this year,
which was overwhelmingly
adopted by the Senate, to crack
down on gun felons and tiard
drug pushers. Discussing this
legislation, the senator said:
“Most crimes involve either
guns or drugs or both. I am
opposed to what is usually
called gun control. But I am not
opposed to giving a stiff
sentence to anyone convicted
of committing a crime with a
gun.
“I can sympathize with those
who tiave become the slaves of
hard drugs and who need help
to be free and productive
again. But there is no penalty
severe enough for those who
profit from the drug destruc
tion of others.
