Fair Moves
Into Final
Three Days
The Butts County Fair heads
into its final three days with
good attendance, interesting
exhibits and pretty weather
being features thus far of the
Exchange Club sponsored
agricultural fair.
The flower show Wednesday
attracted much interest and
had a large number of
horticultural exhibits.
Upcoming events include
school night Thursday at which
all students will be admitted
free beginning at six o’clock
with reduced rates for all rides,
save the new ones.
A feature of Friday night will
be string music with bands
from local and adjacent
counties taking part at the
eight o’clock hour.
Saturday will be bake day
with premiums to be awarded
at 9 p.m.
The award night winners of
Monday at which the Woman of
the Year was named will be
covered in detail in next week’s
paper. This was necessary by
the limitation in receiving
photos and biographical sket
ches of the winners.
Mr. Driskell
Died Sunday
Graveside services for Mr.
Roy Driskell, 82, of Brightmoor
Nursing Home in Griffin,
brother of Mrs. E. L. Crum of
Jackson, were conducted Wed
nesday afternoon, October
10th, at two o’clock in the
Juliette Methodist Church
Cemetery in Juliette with Rev.
Steve Perry officiating. Hais
ten Funeral Home was in
charge of arangements.
Mr. Driskell died Sunday,
October 7th, at eleven o’clock
at the nursing home after an
extended illness. He was born
in Juliette, the son of the late
Mr. Thomas J. Driskell and
Mrs. Sara Greer Driskell.
Survivors include four sis
ters, Mrs. Julia Harden of
Juliette, Mrs. E. L. Crum of
Jackson, Mrs. Mattie Graham
of Jacksonville, Fla. and Mrs.
Bob Booth of Sanford, Fla.;
one brother, Rev. H. L.
Driskell of Monroe, La.

Victim Of
Heart Attack
Mr. George Hunt Ridgeway,
80, of Route 3, Jackson, died
unexpectedly at his residence
about 5:30 o’clock Monday
afternoon, October Bth, after
apparently suffering a heart
attack.
Born in Butts County May 10,
1893, he was the son of the late
Mr. George Robert Ridgeway
of Butts County and the late
Mrs. Lucia Hunt Ridgeway of
Pike County. He had been a
member of Towaliga Baptist
Church for the past 61 years
and was a retired government
employee with the post office
department.
Mr. Ridgeway and his wife,
Mrs. Linda Tyus Ridgeway,
were observing their 60th
wedding anniversary on the
day of his death.
Funeral services were con
ducted Wednesday afternoon
at 3:30 o’clock from the
Towaliga Baptist Church with
Rev. Joe Parham, pastor, and
Rev. Vic Whited, pastor of
Berea Christian Church,
Hampton, officiating. Inter
ment was in Jackson City
Cemetery with Haisten Fun
eral Home in charge of
arrangements.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Linda Tyus Ridgeway of
Jackson; one daughter, Mrs.
Helen R. Vaughn of Jackson;
one son, J. M. Ridgeway, of
Hampton; five sisters, Mrs.
Fannie Turner and Mrs. Mary
Moss, both of McDonough,
Mrs. S. H. Odom of Jackson,
Mrs. Sara Jackson of Warner
Robins and Mrs. Pauline Bush
of Macon; four grandchildren;
three great-grandchildren;
several nieces and nephews.
Nephews served as pall
bearers.
HIGH FALLS SINGERS
WILL MEET SUNDAY
The annual High Falls
Singing Convention meets with
the Paran Baptist Church near
Blount Sunday, October 14th,
with the singing to begin at
10:30a .m. Lunch will bespread
on the ground at 12:30. The
public is cordially invited to
attend this singing.

REM TAX FOR THE YEAR 1973 BE AND ARE HERE
BY LEVIED AND ASSESSED AS FOLLOWS:
I. School Tax for the support and maintenance of
Education as certified and recommended by the
Board of Education of Butts County, Georgia, 16
mills, or $16.00 Dollars on the Thousand Dollars
of taxable property.
H. For payment of principal and interest on School
Bonds, as certified and recommended by the
Board of Education of Butts County, Georgia, .50
mills or $ 50 Cents Dollars on the Thousand Dol
lars of taxable property in Butts County subject
thereto;
in. For public or County purposes, as authorized by
law and by Article VII, Section IV, of the Consti
tution of Georgia, as amended, to - -
PAY FOR THE OPERATION OF THE BUTTS
COUNTY GOVERNMENT, AND THE EXPENSES
OF EACH DEPARTMENT THEREOF, TO-WIT:
(a) The Board of Commissioners and the expenses for the operation of said
Department.
(b) The Tax Commissioner and the expenses for the operation of said Department.
(c) The County Treasurer and the expenses for the operation of said Department.
(and) The Board of Tax Assessors and the expenses for the operation of said
Department.
(e) The Board of Registrars and the expenses for the operation of said Department.
(f) The Clerk of Superior Court and the expenses for the operation of said
Department.
(g) The Court of Ordinary and the expenses for the operation of said Department.
(h) To provide for the operation of the Courts, and the maintenance and support of
prisioners, and the handling of litigation affecting the County.
(i) Establish and conduct Health and Sanitation programs and provide for the
collection and preservation of records and vital statistics.
(j) The Sheriff of Butts County, The Deputy Sheriffs, The County Police thereof, and
the expenses for the operation of said Department, including the Jail, the care of
prisioners confined therein, and the expenses therefor.
(k) Furnishing supplies to each Justice of the Peace.
(l) Pay the salary of the County Coroner and the expenses of said Department.
(m) Pay the County Agricultural and Home Demonstration Agents and conduct
programs for utilizing the services of such Agents.
(n) Establish and Conduct programs of Welfare benefits and public assistance as
may be provided by law.
(o) To provide for the paying of the principal and interest of any debt of the County
and to provide a sinking fund therefor, including debts legally incurred prior to the
current year.
(p) Provide fire protection for Forest Lands and conserve natural resources.
(q) To build and repair the public bridges and buildings.
(r) To provide for reasonable reserves for public improvements as may be fixed by
law.
(s) To provide medical or other care and hospitilization of the indigent sick.
(t) Provide insurance, retirement, and pension benefits, coverage under Federal
Old Age and Survivors Insurance programs, hospitilization benefits and workman’s
compensation benefits for its Officers and employees, their dependents and
survivors.
(u) Acquire, construct, maintain, improve, or aid in the acquisition, construction,
maintenance or improvement of public buildings, bridges, county roads, parks,
public libraries, and other properties for public use; and to acquire real property, or
any interest therein to carry out the foregoing as provided by law; and, to furnish all
necessary supplies, office supplies, office fixtures, stationary, stamps, telephones,
utilities, dockets, ledgers, motor vehicles, automobiles, trucks, road machinery and
equipment, and any other item or article of property in connection with the
foregoing. 11.60 mills, or $11.60 Dollars on the Thousand Dollars of taxable property
in Butts County, Georgia; in addition to the State Tax in the amount of .25 mills, or
$0.25 Cents Dollars on the Thousand Dollars of taxable property in Butts County.
IV. For payment of principal and interest on County
Bonds (Hospital Bonds) .50 mills, or $0.50 Cents
Dollars on the Thousand Dollars of taxable pro
perty in Butts County subject thereto.
The total levy for County purposes being 12.10
mills or $12.10 Dollars on the Thousand Dollars
of taxable property in Butts County.
The total tax levy being 28.85 mills or $28.85 Dollars
on the Thousand Dollars of taxable property in Butts County.
Ordered by the unanimous vote of the Board of Com
missioners of Butts County, Georgia this the 11th day of
September 1973.
