Hairballs are an ever-pre
sent condition that may
develop as your cat begins to
shed.
Shedding is a continuous
process that makes way for the
new coat. When it begins, your
cat’s old hair becomes loosen
ed. This makes the cat irritable
and uncomfortable. Instinc
tively it tries to rid its body of
the loose hairs.
In your home you may see
your cat rub along the carpet
or sofa. If it becomes irritated
out of doors, you may see it
rolling in the grass. It will lick
its forefeet and use them to rub
its face and body - performing
what resembles face washing.
Frequently your cat will use its
tongue to get rid of loose hairs.
This process appears to be
harmless. But, beware! - it
may be ingesting a consider
able amount of the loosened
hair.
Once in the stomach and
intestines, these hairs join into
mats and ropes. The mats and
ropes cause retching, coughing
and vomiting, and they can
develop to the extent of
interfering with elimination. In
severe cases they may even
cause death.
If you suspect the presence of
hairballs, a check with your
veterinarian is the safest
approach.
If a home remedy is
indicated, there are several
things that you can do:
- Give a teaspoonful of olive oil
or mineral oil every week or so
while the shedding is evident.
- If your cat objects to
medication administered in
this way, drop the oil on a
favorite food like sardines or
minced shrimp.
- A small amount of margarine
or butter on the cat’s tongue
may also help.
When administering any
home remedy to relieve cat
hairball obstruction, avoid
strong purgatives like castor
oil. They can trigger other
intestinal disorders.

Regular grooming, begin
ning at about five months of
age, can forestall hairball
formation. Avoid the use of a
steel comb at the early stage -
it may frighten the kitten.
Instead, wrap a soft, damp
ened cloth around your hand
and rub the entire body in the
direction of the hair growth.
Then brush the coat until the
hair is dry.
This method of grooming
your kitten will condition it for
the more harsh strokes that are
sometimes necessary to rid its
coat of mats and tangles.

Let us take a few moments to
look at Jesus Christ. In John
1:1-3 we see that Jesus was in
the beginning with God and
that Jesus is God. This great
truth is also found in I John 5:7
where it says “there are three
that bear record in heaven, the
Father, the Word, and the Holy
Ghost: and these three are one.
The greatest miracle took
place when “Jesus was made
flesh and dwelt among us, (and
we beheld his glory, the glory
as of the only begotten of the
Father,) full of grace and
truth” (John 1:14). Jesus came
to earth as a man and faced the
same life each of us face. When
he went without eating, he
became hungry. When he went
long periods of time without
rest, he became tired. When he
was cut, he bled. Jesus faced
all the physical problems you
and I face today. Jesus was
also moved by the needs of the
people. We see Him healing the
dumb, blind and lame and
there are recorded three places
in the Bible where he raised
people from the dead. We see

Him as he wept at the grave of
His friend Lazarus, and as he
wept over Jerusalem which he
loved so much.
We see Jesus at the age of 12
asking questions of the doctors,
and the people who heard him
were astonished at his under
standing and answers. We hear
the testirtiony of Nicodemus, a
ruler of the Jews, as he tells
Jesus that he was a great
teacher sent from God. As the
people heard Jesus teach, they
were astonished at his doctrine
for he taught as one having
authority.
Jesus said the main purpose
he came to earth was to seek
and to save that which was lost.
The purpose of coming to earth
was not to live but to die on the
cross as a ransom for our sins.
We have looked at Jesus as
God, Man, Teacher, Saviour
and have you taken time to look
at Jesus as an example for you
to follow in your daily life.
Have you followed his teach
ings that He is the only way you
can become a child of God and
accepted the fact that he gave
his life so you may have eternal
life.

RETURN TO EARTH
December 1903 —the law of gravity was questioned when the heavier
than-air machine left ground. Man was no longer chained to the earth.
It’s a long way from Kitty Hawk to “jumbo jets.” Although we can fly
farther, faster today, one fact remains: sooner or later, we must return to
terra firma, for earth —not sky —is our home.
Yet our house is not in good order. Pollution, war, hatred, misery mar
this world. It shouldn’t be like this —and it wouldn’t ... if we would let the
Church help us transform Christ’s example into human action.
