any lien thereon or any
substantial interest therein, to
make known their claims in
writing in said case within
twenty (20) days from the
filing of the petition as
aforesaid; otherwise, the case
will be held in default and the
condemnation and sale of the
said vehicle will follow as
matter of course.

“Some Americans think the
government is run for a
privileged few and not for
every one alike. They do not
believe that it is operated for
and by the people,” stated
Senator Maylon London who
was the principal speaker at
The Central Georgia EMC’s
Minuteman meeting December
6th at 7:00 in the evening at the
Co-op’s headquarters in Jack
son.
Senator London continued,
“This has come about because
of the resignation of the
vice-president; the loss in
credibility most people feel for
the president and the govern
ment.”
Ad valorem taxes was
another subject commented
on. “Georgians do not feel this
is the best method and that
they are unfair and unjust.
Maybe they are right,” he
continued.
Senator London concluded by
stating that the 1973 session of
legislature considered 2,160
pieces of legislation and he
asked, on behalf of the Georgia
Legislature, for the help,
prayers and support of all
Georgians.

FHA CHAPTER AIDS
IN HOSPITAL WORK
The Jackson High FHA
Chapter begins their Christ
mas season by taking a group
of girls up to Spalding County
Convalescent Center to help
the patients in making Christ
mas decorations.
The FHA chapter held an
open house December 12th at
which time decorations were
put on display which had been
made by members and
students in the Home Econo
mics Department of the school.

Claims
A. W. Miller
Funeral services for Mr.
Alton Wilson Miller, 61, of
Route 3, Jackson, were
conducted Tuesday afternoon,
December 11th, at 2:30 o’clock
from England Chapel United
Methodist Church with Rev.
Johnson R. Huggins officia
ting. Interment was in Midway
United Methodist Church
Cemetery in Spalding County
with Haisten Funeral Home of
Barnesville in charge of
arrangements.
Mr. Miller was dead on
arrival at the Griffin-Spalding
County Hospital Sunday after
noon, December 9th, following
an apparent heart seizure.
A native of Spalding County,
he was the son of the late Mr.
Edward L. Miller and Mrs.
Gertrude Wilson Miller. He had
made his home in Barnesville
for many years before moving
to Butts County nine years ago.
Mr. Miller was a veteran of
World War II and was
employed by the State Depart
ment of Agriculture until his
retirement in 1970. He was a
member of the England Chapel
United Methodist Church.
Mr. Miller is survived by a
sister, Mrs. G. A. Tharpe, Jr. of
Jackson; a brother, Fred
Miller of Jackson; a sister-in
law, Mrs. Mary P. Miller of
Barnesville; two nieces, Miss
Trudie Tharpe and Miss Genny
Lee Tharpe, both of Jackson; a
nephew, Edward Miller of
Barnesville.
Legion Is
Active At
Christmas
American Legion Post 102
has received the good news
from Commander Jeff Robin
son that it is number one in
members in the fourth district,
reaching' l 100 percent of the
quota of 57.
Willard A. Patterson, com
mander of the local post,
announces that Joe Brown is
the new oratorical and Boys
State chairman. Mr. Patterson
said that at the recent dinner
for teachers in Locust Grove,
Jackson Christian Academy
indicated much interest in the
oratorical contest and may
challenge Jackson High.
Commander Patterson re
minds all Legionnaires they
are expected to make a
contribution to the Legion by
December 10th to provide
Christmas boxes and help for
the elderly and needy Butts
County veterans and depen
dents. A request has also been
made, Mr. Patterson stated, by
the Georgia Department for a
contribution for hospitalized
veterans.
Commander Patterson an
nounced that current plans for
the local legion post include a
Christmas party December
27th at the Youth Center
featuring a covered dish meal
with Christmas carols and a
guest speaker. Those who wish
to attend are asked to make
reservations with Mr. Patter
son or with Frank Fountain at

Lynn Thaxton
Dies After
Long Illness
Mr. Wiley Lynwood Thaxton,
78, of 608 Joy St., died Sunday
evening, December 9th, about
eight o’clock in the Sylvan
Grove Hospital where he had
been a patient for several days.
Death came following an
extended period of declining
health.
Born July 21, 1895 in Butts
County, he was the son of the
late Mr. Joe Brown Thaxton
and Mrs. Anna Powell Thax
ton, both of Butts County. Mr.
Thaxton was a member of the
First Baptist Church of
Jackson, was a City Policeman
in Jackson for several years
and was a retired bailiff.
Funeral services were con
ducted Tuesday afternoon at
three o’clock from the Liberty
Baptist Church with Rev.
Donald Folsom, pastor of the
First Baptist Church, officia
ting. Interment was in Liberty
Baptist Church Cemetery with
Sherrell Funeral Home in
charge of funeral arrange
ments.
Mr. Thaxton is survived by
one daughter, Mrs. Louise
Thurston of Jackson; two
grandsons, Lynwood Thurston
of Jackson and the U. S. Navy,
and Bennie Thurston of
Griffin; three great-grandchil
dren; one sister, Mrs. Nell
Crawford of Griffin.
Pallbearers were Tom O’-
Dell, David Ridgeway, Dawson
Bryant, J. E. Jones, Freddie
Dodson and Hugh Polk.

McCullough, widely known
Jackson policeman, will regret
to learn he was admitted to
South DeKalb Hospital Wed
nesday evening cf last week.
The many friends of Mrs.
George (Julia) Head, widely
beloved Jackson matron, re
gret to learn she suffered a
shoulder separation as the
result of a fall in the kitchen of
her home Monday evening.
Mrs. Head was carried to
Sylvan Grove Hospital for
treatment, transferred to
Macon for further treatment
and returned to Sylvan Grove
Hospital where she is expected
to be confined several days, it
was reported Tuesday after
noon.
