    Butts County
School News
Mrs. Thelma Crawford, anew
member of the Henderson
Elementary faculty, works in
the area of behaviorial
disorders.
Behavior disorders can be
defined in terms of personality
dynamics or in terms of the
effect of a child’s behavior on
himself or on other people.
Behavior disorder is defined as
a deviation from age-appropri
ate behavior which significant
ly interferes with (1) the
child’s own growth and
development and or (2) the
lives of other. Generally
speaking any child having
difficulty in adjusting to the
school environment to such a
degree that special help is
needed is said to have behavior
disorders.
The behavior disorder child
may exhibit any or all of the
following characteristics:
1. Emotional disturbances
which prohibit adjustment to
everday surroundings.
2. Inability to achieve
satisfactory social relation
ships with peers and adults.
3. Disregard for accepted
social values and rules.
4. Aggressive behavior,
truancy and defiance of
authority.
5. Immature and-or with
drawn behavior.
In addition, children who are
experiencing crisis situations
such as a death in the family,
divorce of parents, severe
illness, school expulsions or
problems in which social
and-or correctional agencies
are involved may also need
supportive help.
Cooperation from the teach
ers has been tremendous in
trying to identify students.
Presently there are seventeen
students involved in the
program at Henderson Ele
mentary School.
Along with the counseling of
the child, psychological ser
vices are provided for students
who are in need of special help.

All schools in Butts County will
be involved in the “Right To
Read” program. In prepara
tion for this program, Dr. Judy
Bazemore, Reading Specialist
with the CESA unit in Griffin,
worked with the Henderson
Elementary teachers on Mon
day in assessing the needs of
the students in the area of
reading.
A large number of Butts
County educators, who are
involved in the “Right To
Read” program attended a
special presentation by Dr. Ira
Aaron, on Wednesday.
Dr. Aaron, an internationally
known figure in the teaching of
Reading and University of
Georgia professor, spoke on
“Reading Total Staff Responsi
bility”. He outlined the
responsibilities for teaching
reading to children, breaking
these responsibilities into six
areas; these being (1) Teach
er’s Responsibilities (2) Prin
cipal’s Responsibilities (3)
Content - Area Teacher’s
Responsibilities (4) Curricu
lum Director’s Responsibilities
(5) Superintendent’s Responsi
bilities -and (6) Parent’s
Responsibilities.
Attending this session of the
State Conference for Curricu
lum Directors, held at Lake
Jackson FFA-FHA Camp,
were: Miss Connie McCrary,
Mrs. Jackie Hutcheson, Mrs.
Ruth Ash, Miss Lynda Ballard,
Mrs. Angelyn Hearn, Mrs.
Becky Waters, Mrs. Peggy
Huggins, Mrs. Lane Johnson,
Mrs. Gwendolyn West, Mrs.
Judy Skinner, Mrs. Velma
Maddox, Miss Edna Murray, J.
M. L. Comer and M. C. Paget.
Mrs. Mary Carr and Dr. Jo Ann
Manley also attended all
sessions of the two day
conference.
The students at Henderson
Elementary School are making
Christmas ornaments. They
will be displayed on a live
Christmas tree in the school
library.
Christmas lights will not be
used this year in the interest of
conserving energy.
Lewis Weldon, father of Lisa
Weldon, contributed the tree.
Mrs. Madeline Edwards, a
fourth grade teacher at
Henderson Elementary School,
was honored at a baby shower
on November 20th at the
Henderson Elementary Li
brary. She was presented an
attractive money tree. Those in
attendance were members of
the Henderson Elementary
faculty and staff. Refresh
ments were served after the
