BY
BRENDA WILLIAMSON;
It’s about all over for 1973.
All that remains is taking down
the tree, putting up the
decorations and treading to the
store to exchange that wrong
size gift or swap that atrocious
color for something more
appealing. Many wives and
mothers will make a list of
resolutions for the next
shoppping season, including a
promise to get through
shopping early, never again
wait until the last minute to
clean house and prepare sweet
treats just to name a few.
Santa’s reindeer have been put
to pasture for another year and
the list goes on and on .... As
the year 1973 fades away, a
new beginning is born. Nine
teen hundred and seventy four
will burst on the scene at
midnight December 31st with a
perhaps grim outlook for
America due to the energy
crisis and other numerous
problems. Americans face
what perhaps will be a most
difficult year, particularly to
those of us who were’t around
during the years of the
depression when gas, food, etc.
was rationed to everyone.
Perhaps this spell of hardship
could be a turning point for
America and will see a
reviving of the standards this
nation was founded upon. One
never knows .... Flowers for
this season of the year are
often hard to come by but the
Christmas flower, the Poin
settia, has been extremely
pretty this year. A number of
plants were designated as
Christmas gifts while others
have been purchased for use in
churches, homes and the like.
The tropical like shrub with its
red. leaves and yellow center
must have proper tender loving
care to live after the Yule
season and many flower lovers
become exasperated over
trying to prolong its beauty
.... Travel during the holi
days has been at a minimum
but regrettably the Georgia
State Patrol has predicted
many deaths for this long
holiday period. Safe and sane
driving is the order of the day
for those who do travel along
the highways and it behooves
one and all to do their very best
to prevent an accident from
occuring. The phrase may
"seem trite since it has been
used over and over again but it
remains true, the life you save
may be your own .... We
enjoyed the annual Christmas
Tree and program at our
church last Thursday evening
at which the younger children
of the church rendered chosen
readings, selected especially
for the occasion. As usual, the
very small “stole” the show
and had the audience waiting
with anticipation for their next
move. Some were shy, some
complete hams, and some
carried out their part just right
but when it was over a big
round of applause came for one
and all. Gifts were distributed,
the Christmas Story read and
all departed for their various
homes full of cheer and
thankful for the true meaning
of Christmas, the birthday of
Jesus .... Luke Weaver was
parading around early Friday
morning looking very much
like Santa Claus in his bright
red coat and was seen walking
to the Post Office quite early as
if to cheer folks up who saw
him. One thing is sure -- he
couldn’t get lost in a crowd if he
wanted to ... . Since this is my
last column for the Progress-
Argus I take this opportunity to
thank my readers for their
many words of kindness during
my employment here. It has
been my pleasure to serve you
and I have enjoyed making
many new friends. I’ve learned
much about the people of Butts
County and much of it will
remain stamped on my feeble
, brain forever. To the cor
respondents, I’m thankful for
having been able to work with
you and I hope I have been at
least a little help to you. Your
news will now be handled by
Paulette Wells Cargile who is
quite capable and I’m sure you
will enjoy working with her.
May everyone have a happy
and prosperous New Year.

Dear Santa Claus:
I am a little boy three years
old. None of that stuff about a
good little boy. You know what
little boys are made of, you

Christmas, that will suit me.
Please be good to my Mama, I

Have you analyzed your
eating habits recently? If you
are overweight, you should.
Generally, overweight per
sons do not have conventional
eating habits. They tend to eat
most their food between 4 p.m.
and midnight.
Breakfast is often skipped;
lunch is light or occasionally
missed; between-meal snacks
are eaten ; but most of the food
for the day is eaten after 4 p.m.
This is not the suggested
eating habit for weight loss.
In fact, when most of the food
for the day is eaten at one time,
more fat is formed and stored
than if that same food was
spread out and eaten over the
entire day.
So, if you’re concerned about
the excess fat you are carrying
around, analyze your eating
habits. If you are eating most
of your food after 4 p.m.,
change your eating habits.
Spread your food out more
evenly during the day.
