Devotional
Brother Douglas Karius
Pastor, County Line Baptist
Church
At this time of year we
celebrate the birth of Jesus
Christ. We should take time to
see*why Jesus came.
In Matthew 5:17 we read
these words of Jesus “Think
not that I am come to destroy
the law, or the prophets: I am
not come to destroy but to
fulfil.” The Old Testament said
the Messiah must be of the
tribe of Judah, of the house of
David, born of a virgin in
Bethlehem of Judea, that he
must die a sacrificial death by
crucifixion, rise from the dead
and Jesus did all of this. He
came and fulfiled the law.
Another reason Jesus came
to earth is found in Matthew
9:13 where Jesus says “for I
am not come to call the
righteous, but sinners to
repentance.” This same reason
for Jesus coming to earth can
be found in Luke 19:10 when
Jesus said “For the Son of man
is come to seek and to save that
which was lost. The Bible tells
us from Genesis to Revelation
that man is a sinner from birth,
because of one man, sin
entered into the world and
death by sin; and so death
passed upon all men, for that
all have sinned. So Jesus came
into the world for you and me.
Jesus said in John 10’; 10 “I
am come that they might have
life, and that they might have it
more abundantly. Jesus came
that you and I might have the
opportunity to live life at its
fullest and not just exist.
The reason we can have this
abundant life is found in Mark
10:45 where Jesus said “the
Son of man came not to be
ministered unto, but to
minister, and to give his life as
a ransom for many.” Jesus
died on the cross not for his
sins, but he died in your place
and mine. He gave his life so
we could become children of
God through faith in him.
After you and I have
excepted Jesus Christ as our
personal saviour, we have
eternal life for Jesus Said in
John 10:28 “And I give unto
them eternal life; and they
shall never perish, neither
shall any man pluck them out
of my hand.”
So we see that Jesus came to
fullfil the Old Testament, and
gave his life that you and I can
become the children of God and
have an abundant and eternal
life. Have you let Jesus come
into your life? If not, now is a
good time.
—PROMISE—
New Year’s Day is full of the
promise of fresh beginnings and
preserves, too, the Saturnalian
wish for and alternation in the
accepted pattern of life. Bells are
rung, sirens sounded and whistles
blown to celebrate its arrival and
resolutions, sadly soon to be pro
ken, are made.
He may have been your
best friend in
school, but do you
really want to lend him
your car?
Why not rent a car
instead!

This is his very first New Year. He’s celebrat
ing it in his own talented fashion, just being cute.
Last year thousands of boys and girls were
arrested. They had all been cute—once!
But did they have the priceless example of
active Christian parents? Were they given moral
and spiritual training in the Church? Did they
grow up in a Christian atmosphere?
This young fellow can’t be absolutely sure
that the New Year is worth celebrating. His fu
ture is in the hands of his parents. But he’s smil
ing because of his confidence in them.
During this New Year their faith in God, and
the sincerity of their relationship with the Church
will begin to determine just what their son is
going to be when he stops being cute.
