Dental
Health
Week
Like the rest of your body,
your teeth and gums need a
well-balanced diet to stay
healthy.
The slogan “Kick the Sweet
Shack Habit” has been chosen
for this year’s National
Children’s Dental Health
Week.
“Frequent eating of food
containing sugar causes the
sticky film called dental plaque
to form faster,” Dr. Bailey
Crockarell, Butts County den
tist, explained. “Bacteria in
the plaque uses sugar to form
acid and other irritants that
lead to dental disease. Each
time you eat sweets, acid
attacks the anamel surface of
your teeth for about half an
hour.”
The local dental leader urged
parents to learn the basics of
“plaque control” so they can
help their children with better
dental health. “Most dental
decay can be prevented if the
right home care procedures
are followed, including a
sensible diet.
Dentists have determined
that frequent eating of foods
that contain sugars - particu
larly between meals - contri
butes to tooth decay.
Each time a person eats
foods that contain sugars,
certain bacteria in the mouth
are stimulated to create acid.
It’s this acid that attacks tooth
enamel, the hardest substance
in the body, eventually causing
tooth decay.
Unfortunately for those of us
who love sweets, certain
bacteria produces these harm
ful acids within a few minutes.
These acids remain harmful
for at least 20 minutes each
time that you eat or drink a
sugary food or beverage. So the
more often you eat sweets and
the longer the sugar remains in
the mouth, the longer thedecay
process continues.
Of course, it’s hard to avoid
eating between meals, but
there are certain foods that
should be avoided like cookies
and candy which are high in
sugar content.
On the other hand, you can
make a list of some of the
nutritious snack foods which
might include; raw celery or
carrots, milk and cheese, nuts,
hard-boiled eggs, fresh fruits
such as apples, oranges and
bananas, popcorn and soda
crackers, sugarless gums and
sugar-free soft drinks.
A good rule to follow is to
save those sweets for meal
time.
Dental cavities affect 98
percent of the people of the
United States at some time
during their lifetime, more
particularly during the first 35
years of life.
The CVAE students of
Henderson Jr. High are asking
all citizens of Butts County to
practice good dental health
habits. They wish everybody
would participate in spreading
the news on the importance of
caring for your teeth.

STORAGE NEEDS VARY
Foods vary in the degree of
temperature and the amount of
moisture needed to retain
quality in storage.
Although most fresh, perish
able foods keep longest and
best in the refrigerator, certain
varieties of apples and some
root vegetables keep well in a
cool basement or outdoor
cellar or pit. A few fruits and
vegetables can be kept
successfully at room tempera
tures.
Green leafy vegetables keep
their crispness and nutrients
best in cold, moist air. On the
other hand, too much moisture
in the air around cherries and
berries encourages the growth
of mold and rot.
Check the storage facilities
you have. Do you have a cool,
dark place to store root
vegetables? If not, purchase
only small quantities of these
vegetables.
Do you have adequate
hydrator space in the refri
gerator? If not, have plastic
bags on hand to store foods that
must be kept moist. Plastic
containers with tight fitting
lids are also suitable. Any
refrigerated food that may lose
quality through drying should
be kept covered.
Know the refrigerator you
use; locate its coldest spots.
Does the refrigerator maintain
a uniform temperature? Pur
chase a reliable thermometer
to check refrigerator tempera
ture.
Meet Feb. 7th
To Decide Babe
Ruth Future
The Van Deventer Babe Ruth
League will meet on Thursday,
February 7, at 7:00 p.m. at the
Van Deventer Building on
College Street for the purpose
of determining if there is
sufficient adult interest to
organize a baseball program
for boys 13 thru 15 years old for
Jackson and Butts County.
All interested adults are
invited to attend this meeting
and help get the league
established for the 1974 season.
Jackson and Butts County
had three teams in the eight
team Van Deventer Babe Ruth
league during 1973. A team
composed of 13 year old boys
and a team composed of 14 and
15 year old boys represented
the league in state play last
year in Columbus. This league
will continue if there is a
sufficient number of adults
who are willing to serve as
league officials, game officials,
concessions stand workers,
scorekeepers, clock operators,
coaches and managers. At
tendance at the February 7
meeting will indicate support
of this fine youth activity for
boys.
