Health Care
Possible for
Vets’ Kin
ATLANTA-Survivors and
dependents of certain veter
ans may be eligible for medi
cal care under provisions of a
law which became effective
Sept. 1, 1973.
Georgia Veterans Service
Director Pete Wheeler said
that Public Law 93-82 au
thorizes the VA to provide
medical care for the spouse or
child of a veteran who has a
total and permanent service
connected disability. Such
care also may be authorized
for the survivor or child of a
veteran who dies as the result
of a service-connected disabili
ty. “It should be empha
sized,” said Wheeler, “that
while the VA authorizes the
medical care for eligible per
sons, the medical care will
not be provided in a VA
hospital or facility.
“In an agreement between
the VA and the Department
of Defense, medical care will
be furnished dependents and
survivors, when authorized by
the VA, under the auspices
of the Civilian Health and
Medical Program of the Uni
formed Services (CHAMPUS)
said Wheeler. These benefits,
administered through CHAM
PUS, will be known as
CHAMPVA (Civilian Health
and Medical Program of the
Veterans Administration), and
are the same benefits as those
provided dependents and sur
vivors of military retirees
under the CHAMPUS pro
gram.
Although the VA deter
mines the eligibility for health
care benefits as provided un
der Public Law 93-82, medi
cal services will be performed
by non-VA sources.
