130 Seniors Will Receive Diplomas At Field Tonight

Jackson High Faculty
Jackson High School will
graduate 130 seniors this
evening at 8 o’clock on the
football field. In case of
inclement weather, exercises
will be moved indoors to the
Jackson High School
Auditorium.
Baccalaureate exercises
were held Wednesday night
in the auditorium. Rev. A. L.
Price of the Second Baptist
Church delivered the princi
pal address.
Invocation was offered by
Rev. Lon Hadwin of the
Jackson Church of the
Nazarene, while the bene
diction was presented by
Rev. A. F. Eusery of Faith
Tabernacle Pentecostal
Church.
This evening salutatorian
Sharon Bankston will deliver
the welcoming address.
Sharon has distinguished
herself throughout high
school in the academic field.
She has never made a grade
in any subject below 90.
Larry Brownlee is the
valedictorian of the Class of
’74. Larry was STAR Student
for Butts County and has also
scored consistently above 90
throughout his high school
career.
Five students will be
honored this evening when
they receive an academic
letter for the fifth year in a
row; these students are
Larry Brownlee, Sharon
Bankston, Joye Letson, Rita
Smith, and Brian Waits.
M. C. Paget, principal of
Jackson High School, will
also present departmental
awards to students who
excelled in one particular
subject.
William B. Jones, superin
tendent of Butts County
Schools, will present the
diplomas to the graduates.
The exercises will begin
promptly, with the invoca
tion being offered by Rev.
Grady L. Head, Assistant
Pastor of Rock Creek Baptist
Church.
After the salulatorian’s
address, presentation of
awards will be made. These
awards, mainly of monetary

nature, are made by local
clubs and businesses to
outstanding graduates each
year.
For the first time the
Atlanta Journal Cup will be
presented to the outstanding
senior. Mr. Paget will make
the presentation.
Mrs. Leslie Johnson will
present two awards from the
family of Hal Barnes.
Millard Daniel will announce
the 4-H award.
The Fashion Pillows award
will be made by Y. C.
Hudson, while Mrs. Jane B.
Powell will present the
Jackson Business and Pro
fessional Women’s Award.
Jackie Bedsole will present
two awards from the Kym
Company, and Byrd Garland
will give the Mercer Univer
sity Award.
The W. L. Miller Award
will be made by Curtis Gaye,
while Mrs. Ivey Bridges will
announce the recipients of
two Parent Teacher Organi
zation awards.
Miss Marian Sanders will
present an award from a
campus club, Student Action
for Georgia Education.
Two awards from the
Sylvan Grove Hospital Auxi
liary will be made by Mrs.
Maureen Shields, and Mrs.
Roy Prosser will present the
Danny Thomason award.
The presentation of awards
will be followed by the
departmental awards.
After Larry’s address,
Superintendent Jones will
present the diplomas and
exercises will be closed with
benediction offered by Rev.
James Kelly of St. Mary’s
Catholic Church, followed by
the school Alma Mater.
This marks the first time
graduation exercises will be
held at the football stadium;
however, the number of
graduates and the large
number of guests necessitate
the change.

Plans Shaping Up For Gala
Fete During Week July 1-6
Plans are definitely taking
shape for the gala week-long
fete, beginning July Ist and
extending through July 6th,
with the political rally on the
courthouse lawn Saturday
Afternoon, July 6th, defi
nitely to be the highlight of
the “Butts County - 149
years” celebration.
Dick O’Hara, Addison-
Rudesal, Inc. executive and
president of the Butts County
Chamber of Commerce, Inc.,
stated this week that activi
ties for the entire week are
being planned with a specta
cular aerial fireworks dis
play sponsored by the
Chamber of Commerce to be
one of the feature attrac
tions. Mr. O’Hara also
announces a golf tournament
at Deer Trail Golf Club for
members only on Wednes
day, July 3rd A 1974 Monte

band for a rock concert at the
fair grounds on Friday. All
week long merchant mem
bers of the Butts County
Chamber of Commerce will
be having a Butts County
“Week Sale” during which
they will give away paper
money that can be spent at
an auction on July 6th.
The Chamber of Com
merce president revealed
that on July 6th “our county
square will take on a carnival
atmosphere when many
candidates for state office
will assemble and make brief
addresses to an anticipated
large crowd.” The candi
dates will be given an
opportunity to meet the
public on the streets and

The Jackson Kiwanis Club
will sponsor during the week
a watermelon eating contest,
a seed spitting contest and
the hog calling contest.
The Butts County Lions
Club will have a hot dog and
cold drink booth at which
people will have an oppor
tunity to purchase mops and
brooms as well as have their
eyes checked.

Department will have a
booth on the courthouse
square to familiarize citizens
with their numerous activi
ties.
the Upper Ocmulgee EOC is
planning to participate but as
yet has not decided n which
manner. The Ladies
Auxiliary of the Butts County
VFW Post have told Mr.
O'Hara that they would
support the Chamber of
Commerce with some type of
carnival booth. The Chamber
of Commerce will have an
auction at which member
merchants will donate usable
goods for the auction block.
Mr. O’Hara said that the
formal address by the
politicians present will take
place around 3:00 or 4:00
o’clock with a mammoth
square dance Saturday night
to climax the week’s
festivities.

Forest Fire Laboratory.
Macon will be dedicated

Jr. will deliver the dedica
tory addresses, announced
Robert Cooper. Director’s
Representative, Southern
Forest Fire Lab. They were
instrumental in securing the
federal appropriation for the
new lab addition.
Senator Talmadge will be
introduced by Eighth District
Congressman W. S. “Bill”
Stuckey, Jr. Robert Dixon,
Board Chairman, Georgia
Forest Research Council,
will introduce Congressman
Flynt.
The ceremonies will begin
at 3:00 p.m.. Cooper added.
The lab is located at the
Georgia Forestry Center on
Riggins Mill Road. The
public is invited.

The new laboratory is
located on land leased from
the State of Georgia. The
original laboratory was built
in 1959 by the Georgia Forest
Research Council. It is
staffed by U. S. Forest
Service scientists from the
Southeastern Forest Exper
iment Station, Asheville.
North Carolina.
The lab is one of three
forest fire laboratories in the
country. The other two are
located at Missoula. Montana
and Riverside, California.
SCOTT COLEMAN WINS
AW ARD AT JUBILEE
Georgia Jubilee, an arts
and crafts festival, was held
Saturday and Sunday at
Central City Park in Macon.
A Jackson artist, Scott
Coleman, was presented a
Merit Award by Governor
Jimmy Carter. Miss Dot
Booth of Crawford won "Best
in the show.”
