Average Consumer Debt In
County $1,400 Per Family
New York, May 25 - To
what extent have Butts
County residents been mak
ing use of the large amount of
installment credit available
to them?
How much do they owe at
the present time on the cars,
washing machines, dish
washers, furniture and other
equipment they have been
purchasing?
Somewhat more than they
did a year ago, the latest
figures indicate. It reflects
the fact that families, locally
and elsewhere, were more
expansive in 1973 in their
spending for high-price
goods, thus adding to their
installment debt.
Nevertheless, they have
kept it within bounds.
Because their incomes are
higher than they were a year
or two ago, they are in a
position to carry a larger

others owe little or nothing.

This takes into account
loans for automobile pur

loans for home repair and

are mortgage debt, charge

With repayments taking $1

average family’s net income,
they amount to approxi

Nationally, according to
the American Bankers

“He’s a bad dog, stay away
from him.”
Although people often refer
to “good dogs” and “bad
dogs”, a dog’s temperament
is not just a matter of good
and bad. It is the result of
many factors, some of which
can be predicted.
It is known that there are
certain inbred characteris
tics affecting a dog’s tem
perament. It is also known
that a dog tends to inherit
certain responses from its
parents.
The Chow Chow, for
example, is generally a one
man dog. It is reserved,
suspicious and indifferent to
strangers. It has a will of its
own and is not recommended
to a home where children are
present.
The Poodle, on the other
hand, is usually a perfect
family pet, especially if
children are around. This
breed of dog is affectionate,
even-tempered and very
obedient.
One way to learn more
about this complex subject is
to discuss your dog’s breed
ing with the veterinarian at
the time of purchase. This
will help you to gain an
understanding of the dog’s
capabilities to socialize.
The average dog buyer is
looking for a pet that can
safely join his family and be
a companion especially
for children. A nervous dog is
not a good companion for
children, under almost any
circumstances.
A dog that is moody or has
a vacillating temperament is
potentially dangerous as it
may not be able to take

Temperament —and safe
ty are not governed by the
size of the dog. A serious dog
bite can be inflicted by a
small Boston Terrier as well
as a large Doberman. In fact,
there are no breeds in which
“bad apples” have not been
encountered.
In determining tempera
ment, there are several
unfavorable signs you should
look out for during the dog’s
initial period away from
mother and littermates:
overly nervous reactions to

unfriendly to people; eratic
responses acting one way
at one time and another way
another time —in similar
situations.
Illness, accident or psychic
trauma may also affect a
dog’s temperament. Even
you, the new owner, may be a
bad influence on what may
have started out as a
pleasant pet.
Clearly, unless you happen
to be an expert, don’t attempt
to train your family dog to be
an attack dog. Most dogs,
even the gentlest, are
protective when the need
arises.
Don’t permit your children
to encourage aggressiveness
with too much rough play.
Sometimes this gets out of
hand. Then a dog will bite out
of excitement.
The relationship between
family, dog and children is
precious. It’s worth taking
any steps to ensure its
success, and your veterina
rian is available to help.
Dr. Minor regrets that he is
unable to personally answer
letters from pet owners. He
suggests that readers consult
their own veterinarians when
their pets have problems.

TOAST TO GOOD TASTE
Spirit-brightened appetizers
offer a range of piquant flavors.
And they gain extra zip when you

HOT BLOODY MARY SOUP
1 can [ 16 ozj tomato juice
1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon onion salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
3/4 cup vodka or Mended whiskey
