A Look at Georgia Politics
By Jerry McLaurin
Staff Writer
The officers are gathered;
the goals are set; the plans
are laid and the soon to be
entangled strategies have
been schemed. Georgia has
been set up and another
campaign is under way.
An “oficially declared
leader” in the campaign, Lt.
Governor Lester Maddox,
picked Clayton County to
kick off his ’74 campaign. He
addressed a crowd of about
350 at Tara Stadium in
Jonesboro on Saturday, June
15. He promised ‘‘to wage
war on crime” and “open up
state government.”
Maddox said that none of
the 15 other qualified
candidates for governor will
be significant opposition for
him.
Mary Hitt, Democratic
candidate for lieutenant
governor, officially opened
her Atlanta Campaign Head
quarters Thursday, June 13,
at the Sheraton Gardens Inn.
She was elected Mayor of
Jesup in 1970; she served one
year on the State Democratic
Executive Committee and in
1972 she was elected to the
National Democratic Com
mittee.
Hitt has publicized a
fifteen plank ACTION Plat

A total of $3,945,000 in grant

communities in Georgia to
supplement Farmers Home

The newly released grant
funds combined with pre

$15,505,000 in loans allocated
for fiscal year 1974 provide a
total of over 20V 2 million

These funds are made
available to help financially
needy communities which
presently lack water and
sewer systems and are not
able to develop them with

Grants help keep the user
