The Full Stature of Man
Ezekiel 2:1 “Son of man,
stand upon thy feet, and I will
speak unto thee.”
Ezekiel thought that he
honored God by falling
prostrate on the ground. He
learned that God was rather
honored by his standing on
his feet. Self-possession is
necessary for the highest
forms of dealing with God.
Yet humility is necessary
too. There is too little of
prostration before God. We
must get down before we can
get up. That is a blessed
humiliation that comes from
a realization of God. But this
man whom God commanded
to rise and stand on his feet
had been low down in the dust
of life. First, lowly abase
ment. Then “rise and stand
upon thy feet.” God calls us
to true dignity when he calls
us to his service.
It is a very false view of
religion which holds that it
tends to make a man
poor-spirited with loss of
integrity. True self-respect
has its roots in religion. When
God says, “stand”, it also
means that he requires
courage in the souls that
would serve him. “Be not
afraid of them.”
The first quality or
attribute of the true prophet
is conviction. The prophets of
science have it. Any man to
be useful must have it.
Another quality of a true
prophet is that of courage.
And even another quality of
the faithful prophet is
character. Conviction, cour
age, character. “Son of man
stand upon thy feet.”
The call to stand upon the
feet indicates also the
uprightness that God would
have in his servants. Right-

ness, integrity. Then when
God calls us to stand he
means he would have us in
readiness to act. “I will
speak unto thee.” “I will
commission thee.” God
would oftener speak to us,
but he does not see that we
are ready to do anything.

BI CAUGHT!
When the jelly disappeared from the refrigerator, when a baseball shat
tered the window, when Mother discovered the stray cat sleeping in her
washbasket . . . like a magnetic needle the accusing finger of my parents
pointed toward me.
It’s a crushing experience to get caught. But it can teach us a vital lesson.
We soon discover a sense of responsibility and learn our obligation to others.
Our true identity emerges.
The Church stands ready to help us learn responsibility. Through religious
education youth today can still discover personal identity-while gaining a res
ponsible view of man’s obligations to God and to society.
