75 Candidates To Appear
In Rally Here on July 6th
The pieces are falling into
place handily for the observ
ance of “Butts County Week
149 years” from July 1
through Saturday, July 6th,
with the political rally at 3:00
o’clock July 6th to be the
piece de resistance of the
weeklong fete.
The observance is sponsor
ed by the Butts County
Chamber of Commerce, Inc.
with Dick O’Hara, President,
spearheading the celebra
tion.
Some of the events will last
from July 1 through the 6th
while others are scheduled
for a day only event.
According to Mr. O’Hara an
“anniversary sale” will be
held July 1-6 by participating
retail merchants. Another
enjoyable event will be the
slices of ice-cold watermelon
offered by M. L. Hodges, Jr.
and staff at Hodges Ace
Home Center between July 1
and July 5.
Two events dear to the
hearts of sport lovers will be
the members only golf
tournament at Deer Trail
Golf Club on Wednesday,
July 3rd, beginning at 8:00
o’clock. Lorie Mangham,
club pro, will host the
tourney. A Monte Carlo will
be offered to the first golfer
making a hole in one on No. 3
by ABW Chevrolet and
Carmichael Insurance

Agency. A tennis tournament
will be held July 5 and 6 at the
Van Deventer tennis court on
South Mulberry Street.
A spectacular display of
fireworks is scheduled for
July, 4th at Wallace Field.
This will be preceded by a
skydivers exhibition by
members of the Greene
County Sport Parachute
Center near Jenkinsburg.
The parachutists will jump
about 8:00 o’clock while the
fireworks exhibition is sche
duled for approximately 9:00
o’clock.
A rock concert with a band
yet to be named will be the
feature of Friday, July sth,
from 8:00 o’clock to midnight
at the fairgrounds.
According to Mr. O’Hara,
day-long activities will get
underway July 6th at 10:00
o’clock with a hog calling
contest. This will be followed
at 10:30 by a greased pig
chase and at 11:30 by a
watermelon eating contest
and a watermelon seed
spitting contest. All these
events will be held on the
courthouse lawn.
Mr. O’Hara announces that
the political candidates will
speak at 3.00 o’clock with
each candidate allotted five
minutes to make his or her
presentation. Willie Avery

The climax of the celebra
tion will be a square dance
Saturday night at 7:00
o’clock around the court
square which will be ropdd
off.
Mr. O’Hara calls attention
to the fact that during the
events, homemade ice
cream, hot dogs and Cokes,
cakes and cookies will be sold
from booths around the court
square.
One of the most comical
features of the Butts County
Week will be the clown dunk
on Saturday, sponsored by
the Butts County Jaycees. An
accurate throw will dunk the
clown of the moment in a tub
of water.
Mr. O’Hara said that
invitations have been extend
ed to other candidates and it
is likely that adclitional
candidates will be on hand
for the political rally.
Mr. McElheney
Died After
Brief Illness
Mr. Henry Willis Mc-
Elheney, 70, of 466 West
Avenue, former Butts County
Surveyor, died at the Medical
Center of Central Georgia in
Macon early Sunday morn
ing after being admitted to
the hospital a few hours
earlier. Mr. McElheney had
been in declining health for
some time.
Born June 8, 1904 in Butts
County where he had lived all
his life, Mr. McElheney was
the son of the late Mr. James
Newell McElheney and the
late Mrs. Willie Mae Collins
McElheney.
Mr. McElheney was a
retired superintendent of the
Sanitation Department, City
of Jackson, and a member of
the First Baptist Church.
Funeral services were
conducted Monday afternoon
at four o’clock from the
chapel of Haisten Funeral
Home with Rev. Don Folsom,
pastor of the First Baptist
Church, officiating. Inter
ment was in Jackson City
Cemetery with Haisten Fun
eral Home in charge of
arrangements.
Mr. McElheney is survived
by his wife, Mrs. Alma Pelt
McElheney; two daughters,
Mrs. Artis Knowles and Miss
Cathy McElheney; a son,
Henry Lee McElheney, all of
Jackson; a brother, W. O.
McElheney of Warner
Robins; three granddaugh
ters, Valerie and Kim
McElheney, and Mandy
Knowles, all of Jackson.
Pallbearers were Bobby
Stephens, Billy Pelt, Johnnie
Pelt, David Pelt, Julian
Kim bell, Stanley Maddox,
Doug Pelt, and Mickey
Smith.

Friday
Professional wrestling re
turns to Jackson on Friday,
June 21st, at the high school
gymnasium. The event is
sponsored by the Butts
County Jaycees with Happy
Humphrey Enterprises as
promoter-.
The matches will feature
Happy Humphrey, all 701
pounds of him, as the
world’s largest wrestler. He
will face two opponents at
once.
Admission will be $3.00 for
ringside seats; $2.00 for
general admission and SI.OO
for children under 12.

were touring Georgia for two
weeks in their spacious
camper and spent Saturday
night and Sunday in this
community. Mr. Pearson is a
brother-in-law of Mrs. Dor
cas Morgan Pearson. The

worship services at Mace
donia Church Sunday.

home of Mrs. Lloyd White on
Monday afternoon. Mrs.
Bessie Cawthon presented an
interesting discussion on
“Hong Kong.” At the close of
the program, Mrs. White
served delicious refresh

extends sympathy to Mr.
Harold Standard in the death
of his brother, Mr. Wilson
Standard, last Tuesday.

Reunion Set
For Saturday
The annual reunion of the
Jackson Rifles will be held
Saturday, June 22nd, at the
National Guard Armory on
Franklin Street.
The reunion date was
decided on at a recent
meeting of the Board of
Directors of the Jackson
Rifles Holding Company and
was announced by Harry
Ridgeway, chairman.
The reunion has been held
annually since Company A,
121st Infantry and the
Quartermaster Detachment
returned from service in
World War 11. Mr. Ridgeway
stated anyone who was a
member of the unit prior to
the 16th of September 1940
was invited and encouraged
to attend.
The festivities will begin at
5:30 o’clock at the Armory
with a refreshment hour.
Following this, barbecue and
fish will be served about 6:30
o’clock. A short business
session will be held after the
meeting.

“Open House” at the new
parsonage of Stark United
Methodist Church Sunday
afternoon was attended by a
large number of people from
all parts of the county. The
beautiful new building was
toured from the front door to
the kitchen. It is beautifully
furnished and was admired
by everyone present. A
number of young ladies
served punch and a variety of
cookies to the guests upon
their arrival. Mrs. Claude
Dixon kept the registration
book. The new pastor is
arriving this week.

Kattel Named Chairman
Of C&S National Bank
ATLANTA, June 11 At
their regular meeting here
today, the directors of The
Citizens and Southern Na
tional Bank promoted Rich
ard L. Kattel to Chairman of
the Board. He will remain as
the bank’s president as well.
Mr. Kattel, 38, has been
president of the $3 billion
bank Since July, 1971 when he
succeeded Mills B. Lane.
Speaking for the board,
Mr. Lane, who remains a
director, said: “The office of
Chairman of the Board,
which was held by Jack
Glenn, and then by me, has
been vacant since our
retirement from the bank.
During the three years since
Dick Kattel was made
president, he has demon
strated exceptional ability
and leadership and has made
a remarkable place for
himself in the banking
industry. It could not be more
fitting then, that he hold the
office of Chairman of the
Board as well as that of
President and head of the
bank.”
