Man Walks
Into Lake,
Drowns
A 47-year-old man, Hugh
Troy Waters, recently of
Selma, Alabama but now a
resident of Barnett’s Bridge
Road, Jackson, drowned late
Tuesday afternoon when he
walked into Jackson Lake
fully clothed and kept going
until his body was recovered
some 40 minutes later.
Roger Kersey, a ranger
from the Manchester Divis
ion of the State Game and
Fish Department, said that
Waters was at the lake near
the Kersey camping area
with two companions when
he walked into the lake at
4:26 p.m. Kersey indicated
that evidence pointed to the
victim having been drinking.
Dragging operations were
begun immediately with the
body recovered at 5:10 p.m.
by James Shaw of the Butts
County Civil Defense Unit in
water between 15 and 20 feet
deep.
Mr. Kersey said three
boats took part in the search
operations including one
from Butts County, one from
the State Game and Fish
Department and a private
boat.
Mr. Kersey recalled that
this was the first drowning at
Jackson Lake since August
1972.
