Jackson Blanks Stockbridge
36-0 in Opener Friday
By Frank Hearn
Threatening skies and wet
grass failed to dampen the
spirits of a fighting band of
Red Devil gridders as they
quickly established control of
this opening contest and
rolled to an easy 36-0 victory
over Stockbridge.
Both Jackson and Stock
bridge came out sporting
new offenses, the popular
wishbone. However, the Big
Red Machine on baby blue
legs definitely had superior
personnel. The margin of
victory could and should
have been greater; however,
several Jackson drives were
stopped by penalties and
fumbles. Accolades are in
order for the Devil defense
which provided the neces
sary impetus for this opening
win by intercepting two
passes, recovering three
fumbles and causing one
safety.
Jackson won the toss and
elected to kick, hoping the
opening game jitters and the
wet field would cause a Tiger
mistake in Devil territory.
Strategy succeeded. Three
plays netted 4 yards. A short
punt put the Devils in
business on the Tiger 48.
Larry Jester carried the first
three times in 74 and gained a
total of 21 yards and one first
down to the 29. A wet field
and a fumbled handoff gave
Stockbridge relief and Au
brey Burford punted into the
end zone.
Five Tigers were in
possession on their 20 and
could not move the chain
gang crew so on fourth down
the Devil defense blocked a
punt and Bobby Long fell on
it at the 28. In three plays the
Red grabbed but 8 yards and
on fourth and two, John
Morgan slipped on the wet
turf. On second down Ellis of
Stockbridge, their leading
ground gainer, picked up 5
yards but an illegal proce
dure penalty set them back
inside the ten.
On fourth down a fumble
gave the Devils a golden
chance at the nine, wherein
John Morgan raced on a
keeper to the right to tally the

END AROUND GAINS SEVEN FOR TIGERS

tirst Jackson six for 74.
Aubrey Burford split the
cross bars perfectly for
seven, so with less than 90
seconds left in the first
quarter, Jackson began to
pull away.
After the ensuing kickoff,
both teams failed to move the
football for the required first
down yardage. As Jackson
attempted to punt, the center
snapped a perfect spiral high
over Burford’s head and for
awhile, he electrified the
crowd with his effort to run
out of trouble, carrying the
ball out to Jackson’s own 48.
Short of first down, Stock
bridge took over and was in
Jackson territory for the first
time. Stockbridge picked up
their initial first down when
George, the quarterback,
fumbled expertly to his own
end who scampered 15 yards
to the Jackson 31. The drive
was short lived as Lamar
Smith recovered a George
fumble and returned it 22
yards to the Tiger 42.
Dale White, Capt. Bernard
Mayfield and Ricky Smith
swapped turns lugging the
leather to a first down on
Stockbridge’s 14 yard line.
Then John Morgan rolled
right and hit Dave White with
a scoring pass. Burford’s
second straight PAT allowed
Jackson a 14 point lead at the
half.
Jackson came back quick
ly in the second half and
|>egan putting points on the
board. Burford put the Tigers
in a hole with an end zone
kickoff, from which the
Tigers never recovered.
Jerry White promptly
smothered Mr. Ellis of
Stockbridge for a two
pointer. After Stockbridge’s
free kick from their own 20, it
took Jackson but one breath
to make it a rout. John
Morgan kept inside his left
tackle and sprinted from the
Tiger 43 to the Tiger end zone
and six points. Truetoe
Burford did his thing for the
third straight time and
Jackson had a 23 to zip Tiger
dunkin’ on Devil Hill with
shortly more than 5 minutes
left in the third quarter.
Daniels returned Burford’s

kickoff to the 27 and a screen
pass to Shepard sneaked in
the second Tiger first down.
George managed to move his
outmanned Tigers to another
first down on the 48.
However, the Devis said, “no
more.” The Tiger (Kittens)
had to boot it. With the ball on
their 18, the Devils could not
move and had to kick.
Here again came a
reoccurrance of an awful
snap from center. The ball
sailed over Burford’s head.
Aubrey managed to get it out
to the 20, but no more.
Stockbridge was in excellent
position to score. They tried
the airways for three downs,
and Ricky Smith picked off
the third pass and brought it
out to the 19 as the quarter
ended.
Jackson could not move
the chains so Burford punted,
Shepard fumbled the kick,
and Lamar Smith recovered
to give the Red Devils
possession at their 49.
Morgan broke loose on third
down to carry to the 37. On
the first down play, Ricky
Smith scooted right end to
the Tiger five. Big Jester
bulled into paydirt. A penalty
on the PAT against Jackson
did not dampen Burford’s
true toe, as he split the posts
from his 7 yard line. Thirty
love and it wasn’t as close as
that.
Jackson went on to score
and an insulting six when
Ricky Smith intercepted a
George pass and raced 28
yards to score. Burford’s try
for an unprecedented 5
straight extra point kicks
was blocked. It ended with
Stockbridge gamely trying
to score via the pass, but it
was not to be.
Jackson executed their
new offense well at times,
and as expected with opening
night games, poorly at times.
Mistakes were evident but
bustle and enthusiasm
covered them over. A good
start for the wishbone Devils,
but their time to savor
victory must be shortlived
with Mary Person’s of
Forsyth storming the Hill
this Friday.

Coach Wade’s Critique
After 5 times on the losing end, this
victory was mighty sweet.
First, I thought we looked good in the 74
uniform.
We had very good moments both
offensively and defensively.
I was very pleased that our new offense,
the wishbone, was able to function as well as it did.
John Morgan did a good job running the
offense.
The backs did a fine job carrying out their
fakes.
I guess the score of the game caused us to
let up on fundamentals late in the game, because
we failed to carry out fakes and follow through on
blocks.
Defensively we look very good on the run.
Our pass defense needs some work.
Middle linebacker James Clark was very
effective at his position.
We feel like our defense is going to be very
strong.
Our hopes and plans are to keep the ball on
offense and not allow the opponent to have many
chances to score.
The old saying that, “A good defense is a
time consuming offense,” is very true.
Our kicking game looks very good with
Aubrey Burford handling the chores.
I’m sure Aubrey will win some games for
us with his toe. Kicking and tackling looked to be
one of our strongest points.
We appreciate the support and we
certainly want everyone to come out and see the
second win.
We will be disappointed if we don’t have
six thousand spectators.
Remember, it has been a long time since
Jackson beat Mary Persons. Don’t miss the party.
ball teams have been so
fortunate to have.
Manolis reported to Jack
son High coaches, Ron Wade
and his assistants, that the
program should start to grow
now that it has gotten off the
ground, and that many good
football players will develop
from the program. Future
outlook is a championship for
Jackson and Butts County.
