Butts Residents Are
Getting Bigger Pensions
(Special to the
Progress-Argus)
NEW YORK, Sept. 14 -
How much are Butts County
residents now receiving from
Washington each month in
the form of social security
checks?
How do these checks
compare in size with those
going to other sections of the
country?
The latest official figures,
released by the Social
Security Administration,
show that the pension
payments in the local area
are comparatively large.
They have been rising
considerably during the last
few years, due to the
increases that have gone into
effect.
Payments to Butts County
beneficiaries, as of the
beginning of this year, were
at the annual rate of $1,423
per recipient, as against
$1,063 in 1971.

The first ratings for the
1974 football season are close
to being a carbon copy of the
initial ratings for any of the
past five or six seasons.
There are usually one or two
new faces, but for the most
part it’s the same big
names the perennial
powerhouses of college foot
ball. Always thought it would
be great to see a switch in
“personalities” . . . Mis
sissippi State, Clemson, and
New Mexico, for example, in
first, second, and third.
However ....
While Oklahoma takes a
day off, the other powers
plan busy Saturdays. North
western and Wyoming take
respective issues with Notre
Dame and Texas. Can’t see
much chance of argument
over any issues as the potent
Irish will bury the Cats from
Evanston by 42 points, and
the Longhorns will send the
Cowboys scurrying for newer
guns. Texas by 44 points.
Arizona State had a
vacation last week after
whipping Houston the pre
vious Saturday. The Sun
Devils take on Texas
Christian this weekend in an
attempt to boost their
national position before mov
ing into conference play.
Arizona State will win
number two as they’re
favored by 31 points.
And the Biggest Two in the
Big Ten, Michigan and Ohio
State, are favorites in
non-conference games. The
Buckeyes will be big 35-point
winners over Oregon State,
but the Wolverines will have
a harder time against

Just how much goes to a
beneficiary, or to members
of his family, is determined
by the amount he earned
during his working years.
The fact that the checks
going to local residents are
running bigger, on average,
than those to many other
parts of the country indicates
that, over the years, their
incomes were better.
More and more retired or
disabled people and their
dependents qualify each year
to receive social security
payments, due to revisions of
the law that have reduced the
age of retirement and
brought in classes of workers
that were ineligible former

The current report shows
that the number of persons in
Butts County who were
receiving pension payments
in the past year was 1,905. In
1971 there 1,726.

Colorado. Michigan should
beat the Buffaloes, but the
spread is only 15 points.
The Southeast Conference
and the Big Eight are again
loaded with talent. Nebraska
goes to Wisconsin and
Oklahoma Sate clashes with
surprising Arkansas. The
Cornhuskers will beat the
Badgers by 31 points, and it
appears that the Razorbacks
will give the Cowboys all they
can handle .... Okla-.
homa State by nine.
Alabama, Auburn, Georgia
and L.S.U., just to name a
few Southeast powers, are
picked to win. (So what else
is new!) The Tide is 32 points
stronger than Southern Mis
sissippi . . . Auburn may
bomb Chattanooga by about
35 .... the Bulldogs
should nip Mississippi State
by four .... and
L.S.U., well, they might
possibly run into problems.
Texas A & M is the underdog,
but only by twelve points.
Miami of Ohio draws a
major assignment in at
tempting to keep its winning
streak alive. Perdue is the
obstacle, but it says here that
Miami will win by twelve.
IN APPRECIATION
We would like to express
our sincere appreciation and
special thanks to the staff at
Sylvan Grove Hospital, Dr.
Jack Newman, and Mrs.
Clyde Thaxton Hodges for
the wonderful services to our
loved one during her illness.
Many thanks also to friends
and neighbors for the many
expressions of love and
sympathy extended in our
great loss. For every kind
deed and words of comfort,
we are most grateful.

THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARCUS, JACKSON, GEORGIA
has been accompanied by
frequent hikes in the a
mounts paid out in benefits,
as well as in the payroll taxes
that go to pay for them.
The figures show that more
than $2,712,000 is now
entering the county annually
via the social security route.
In 1971, by way of contrast, it
was $1,836,000.
The increase, 47.7 percent,
compares with a rise of 41.6
percent in the United States
and with 43.9 percent in the
South Atlantic States.
With the changes that have
been made, social security
has expanded to huge
proportions. It involves the
collection and payout of over
ssl billion annually, which is
nearly a'fourth of all other
Federal receipts.

The Gospel Road Be
Shown at Two Churches
The story is old, but the
perspective is up-dated and
brought into sharp focus by
the film THE GOSPEL
ROAD to be shown on
Sunday, Sept. 29th, at First
Baptist Church and Mace
donia Baptist Church. The
showing will begin at 7:30
p.m. at both churches.
THE GOSPEL ROAD,
distributed by World Wide
Pictures, was conceived and
produced by Johnny Cash
and his wife, June Carter
Cash, whose desire was to
tell the story of Jesus Christ
in a realistic and meaningful
way.
The film is a unique blend
of scripture-based narrative,
an abundant supply of
specially written songs, and
a series of in-depth character
portrayals, with Israel itself
as the mixing bowl.
You are there, walking
beside the Jordan and the
Sea of Galilee; you are there,
seeing Him in many human
situations that establish a
practical and personal rap-
port with every viewer.
You are there, being
introduced to the disciples,
and gaining insights into
their varied personalities.
You are there, experiencing
the highly charged emotional
impact of the trial before
Pilate, and becoming so
personally involved that you
feel sympathetic pain when
Robert Elfstrom, in an
outstanding portrayal of
Christ, suffers the physical
attack that precedes the
Crucifixion.
Adding to the effectiveness
of THE GOSPEL ROAD in its
endeavor to convey reality
for this day are: the
fascinating treatment of the
Crucifixion, making this
tragedy an event of signifi
cance that reaches from its
own time across the years to
take on meaning for all men
of all ages; and the songs and
background music of Johnny
Cash and other outstanding
musicians, whose contem
porary style is not out of
keeping with the story .
