Our working gal for this
week is Mrs. Rebecca
Duffey, clerk of the Butts
County Health Department.
Mrs. Duffey, who has been
employed in her position for
almost thirty years, has
extensive responsibilities;
she handles all necessary
purchasing, bookwork and
most all of the other office
duties.
Laughingly, she recalled
that when she first began
working in public health, the
Butts County office was
located on the second floor of
the courthouse in two small
rooms. All of the papers were
filed in paste-board boxes! At
that time there were only 2
people employed: Mrs. Duf
fey, and the public health
nurse, Mrs. Ethel Ham.
The Health Department
moved to its present location
in 1952. Mrs. Duffey stated
that many, many changes in
health work had taken place
through the years. For an
example, when a person with
TB came for help in those
earlier days, he would be
sent to Battey Hospital in
Rome, where the cure would
take around 18 months;
today the patient can be
cured in 6 weeks! Another
change Mrs. Duffey noted is
the enlarged amount of
work she estimated that
they do approximately 30
times as much work as they
used to do.
Mrs. Duffey is a very
modest lady and naturally
would not laud herself;
therefore, I considered my
self quite fortunate to receive
a phone call from a lady who
knew Mrs. Duffey’s work in
the health field to be
considered among the best in

Mrs. Duffey’s duties are
quite extensive, yet she still
finds time to be very
concerned with the people
she comes in contact with
each day. This same lady,
who reported on Mrs.
Duffey’s excellence, told me
of one occasion several years
ago, when a fellow came
staggering through the
department’s door. It seems
he had been “hitting the
bottle” pretty hard and Mrs.
Duffey, knowing him to be
normally a hard-working
man with a large family, saw

would arrest her now for
helping him evade the law, as
she committed this act out of
kindness!)
As Mrs. Duffey has been
dealing with Butts County
folks for some time, she
knows most all of us. She is
quite renowned for her
memory of people’s names
and faces.
The mother of one son,
Lee, Mrs. Duffey has been
a member of Stark United
Methodist Church all her
life having been born and
raised in the Stark Commun
ity. She, her husband and son
are quite active church
members. In fact, Mrs.
Duffey is Sunday School
Superintendent, a member of
the United Methodist Wom
en’s Group, and also a choir
member. She has held
several offices in the UMW
organization.
This working gal, a
graduate of Jackson High
School, attended college at
Georgia College at Milledge
ville, for eleven months;
during this time she did
clerical training. Her attend
ance was under the auspices
of the NYA, National Youth
Administration.
A lady who has come a long
way since her $75 per month
salary days, Mrs. Duffey
feels that women should
receive the same pay as men
for the same work. She feels,
too, though, that men are
better qualified in some
areas. As for women in
politics, Mrs. Duffey stated
that “if they are qualified,
I think they should hold
office.”
The Duffeys have recently
built a beautiful new home,
which evidences “Miss Re
becca’s” excellent qualities
as a cook and homemaker.
She lists cooking and
housekeeping as two of her
most enjoyable things to do.
Her kitchen, which is built
with every convenience and
her central vacuum system
are two items which really
help her save valuable time.
Mrs. Duffey also loves
flowers, pictures and the 2
“Duffey” cats.
As you can see, Mrs.
Rebecca Duffey is quite an
active and likeable lady. Our
bouquets, to you, Miss
Rebecca. We thank you for
your kind manner and
considerate way.

stimulants are also used in the treatment

The plan of conditional
amnesty offered by Presi

Vietnam War resisters is not
acceptable to The American
Legion, according to State
Commander R. B. Echols of
Atlanta.
“Our position has been, is,
and will be that every draft
dodger and deserter must be
treated as a law breaker and
be judged on an individual
basis,” Echols said. “A
period of alternate service in
hospitals, homes for the aged
or children, or in conserva
tion work is a direct insult to
those who gave their lives in
the Vietnam War and to their
families, the thousands suf
fering the ravages of war in
hospitals and elsewhere, and
those missing in action,” he
continued.
“The American Legion is
on record at the State and
National level as opposing
