FALL AND WINTER
SHRUB PLANTING
Many gardeners mistaken
ly believe they must wait
until spring arrives to plant
shrubs. Actually, shrubs can
be planted in fall and winter
in this county. In fact, there
are several advantages to
doing it then.
First, fall and winter
planting allows the shrub to
establish its root system in
the new soil long before the
hot dry weather of summer
arrives. This lessens trans
planting shock.
Research at Cornell Uni
versity shows that shrub
roots can grow at a soil
temperature of 45 degrees
although the top of the plant
does not grow at this
temperature.
Another advantage of fall
or winter planting is that the
gardener can select pleasant
working temperatures dur
ing this time and thus is
likely to do a better job of soil
preparation.
Gardeners will also find
that nurserymen have more
time to offer advice in the fall
and winter than in the spring
rush season. Additional in
formation on planting shrubs
can be obtained from my
office.
COMPOST HEAP FROM
LEAVES
Who says money doesn’t
grow in trees?
“Autumn leaves are va
luable material for the
gardener.” “They make
excellent compost or mulch.
Best of all, the only price is a
little elbow grease.”
Compost improves the
structure of any type soil.
Added to sandy soil, compost
helps conserve moisture, and
clay soils retain air better
when compost is added.
There are a number of
ways to make compost. The
one that is most popular is
“the lazy man’s method.”
Simply pile autumn leaves in
an outdoor bin. Then forget
about them and let Mother
Nature run the show.
“Stack the leaves in
October. By May the com
post is ready.” If you don’t
have a bin, construct a
simple one from four treated
fence posts and chicken wire.
Make the stack as big as
possible. During the winter it
will shrink to a third of the
original height.

Cancer Incidence in County
Lower Than National Average
< Special to the
Progress-Argus)
New York, Nov. 9 Con
cern about cancer has been
heightened in Butts County,
especially among local wo
men, because of the recent
mastectomy operations on
Mrs. Ford and Mrs. Rocke
feller.
People are asking what
progress is being made
toward controlling the di
sease. They are interested in
the mortality rate locally as
compared with that in other
areas.
Questions like these are
being raised in every part of
the country. Nationally, a
seemingly contradictory si
tuation is revealed in
Government reports. On the
one hand they show that
doctors are curing a larger
proportion of cancer patients
than ever before.
On the other hand, more
people are contracting the
disease and the number of
deaths is increasing.
The answer is to be found
elsewhere, points out the
American Cancer Society. It
is due to the fact that fewer
people are being struck down
by the infectious diseases,
which were once the big
killers, with the result that
more of them are living to an
advanced age, where they
are more susceptible to
cancer.
The degree of cancer
mortality in Butts County is
indicated in the annual
reports of the U.S. Public
Health Service.
Its last three annuals show
an average of 15 cancer
deaths per year in the local
area. Not included are those
involving non-residents.
This amounts to a rate of

Some states require proof

Be proud of Butts County!
Why? Because today, No

judges are visiting Jackson
today. This contest is
sponsored by the EMC’s and
the Soil Conservation Dis

Mrs. Gwen Juhlin, Chair

slide presentation showing
the efforts of many people in
our community cleaning up
and improving our environ

The luncheon is being
prepared by our local EMC

There are many forms of
allergies and individuals
may be allergic to one thing
or many. One of the most
common disorders is being
allergic to some particular
food, or combination of
foods. Very often someone, is
only mildly allergic to
certain foods and this will not
show up unless two or more
of the foods are consumed.
It’s these strange circum
stances which makes aller
gies hard to identify. This is
the reason that extensive
testing is very often required
before a person’s allergies
can be identified. The
definition and treatment of
allergies is a complex
