Buffy, a beautiful Persian
cat with emerald green eyes
and long black fur with white
markings, makes her home
with Bobby, Jeanette, Leigh
Ann and Leslie Stephens of
Jackson.
About 4 V 2 years ago, Buffy
wandered into the Stephens’
grocery store and was thin
apd on the brink of
starvation. Jeanette, a softy
for hungry critters, took her
to the back of the store for
food and drink and there
Buffy remained until closing
time, tucked away in a cozy
pasteboard box. After clos
ing, the Stephens took her
home with them and there
she has stayed.
Five months after wander
ing into the grocery store,
Buffy had a litter of six
kittens after which she was
“fixed” the Stephens are
not people to make the same
mistake twice! Of that litter
only one kitten remains and
Mrs. La Rue Turner has her.
Since being spayed, Buffy
has been dubbed with the
alias “Queen of the House”
by Bobby. It seems that
during the operation Buffy
not only got spayed but also
got a mind of her own. For
example, the Stephens
bought her a very nice
wicker basket to sleep in, but
she has decided that she
would rather lay her head in
a cardboard box.
Her preferences at meal
time might also be consi
dered as an example. She
refuses to do more than sniff
at cat food which is not fresh
out of the can. For awhile,
the Stephens tried to fake her
out by pretending to open an
liHready opened can of
4 catfood but that failed
miserably, so they have
given up and Buffy gets fresh
catfood at each meal. A few
turns of the can opener will
bring Buffy running, licking
and sniffing.
Fish is Buffy’s favorite at
mealtime but she will on
occasion ask for liver or
kidney yes, ask for.
Jeanette says that each
morning as she readies the
coffee percolator, Buffy will
give her little love bites
around her ankles if she
wants fish; on the other
hand, outstretched paws
hanging in her pajama legs
is the signal for liver or
kidney. Jeanette is some
times perturbed by Buffy’s
Mack of patience but “at
least!” she says, “I know
what she wants.”
After each meal Buffy
performs a bath ritual. She is
very peculiar about her
coat’s appearance and won’t
tolerate any petting while
bathing.
Each morning, Buffy must
BUFFY DOING HER THING IN THE TUB
have a hug from Leigh Ann
and Leslie. They each pick
her up and Buffy puts a paw
on each of their shoulders
and hugs, her head rubbing
their face from one side to
the other. She will only hug
children, but when she is
chilled or cold after coming
in from the cold outside, she
hops into Bobby’s or Jea
nette’s lap and curls up until
she is warm.
Among Buffy’s favorite
pastimes are sleeping in bed
with the Stephens daughters,
Leigh Ann and Leslie,
playing with string, running
through the house and most
of all, eating. The latter is a
blessing in disguise for she is
now too fat to get to Pee Wee,
the Stephens’ parakeet. That
bird seems to really bug her,
but as yet she hasn’t
managed to get to him.
The Stephens have had
cats before, but their dogs,
Poachie, Cocky, Mop and
Dede wouldn’t let them stay.
However, Buffy is one cat
that they have learned to
respect the hard way,
especially Poachie who has
suffered several bloody
noses, thanks to Buffy.
“The Investigator” is
another alias of Buffy’s from
Mr. Stephens (the Stephens
grandfather). Buffy is sure to
thoroughly investigate any
and every strange car to
occupy the Stephens drive
way.
Avery tidy lady, Buffy is
very particular about where
she does her cat business.
According to Jeanette, “she
has never done wrong by the
house or floor.” If her litter
box doesn’t suit, she hops into
the bathtub and gets over the
drain to empty her bladder,
as evidenced by the photo
above. One morning the girls
left water in the tub and
Bobby found Buffy sitting on
the commode!

The Stephens love their
pets and wish that everyone
felt the same way about
animals as they. The
Stephens pets get real love
and real attention and there
is little wonder that all six of
them are healthy and high
spirited animals.

Residence
The house occupied by
Geneva Grier and her son,
Morris Grier, at 430 West
College Street, was totally
destroyed by fire late
Saturday afternoon, January
llih.
Jackson Fire Chief W. L.
(Cotton) Vaughn said the
Volunteer Fire Department
responded to the call about
5:30 p.m. and when they
arrived on the scene a front
bedroom was engulfed in
flames.
Chief Vaughn said that a
conversation with the son led
him to believe that the fire
originated from an old wood
heater in which the son had
started a fire a short time
before. Chief Vaughn said the
department fought the fire
for about an hour as it spread
from room to room through
the ceiling. As it appeared
the fire would be extin
guished in one room, Mr.
Vaughn said it would spread
to another through the ceiling
and when the tar roof caught
on fire there was little else
for the fire department to do
than hose down the next door
home of James Besley and to
keep a propane gas tank in
the yard from exploding by
keeping it as cool as possible
under the circumstances.
The contents of the house
were totally lost, according
to Chief Vaughn.
The Jackson Fire Chief
urges spectators at future
fires to please stay away
from the scene, pointing to

THURSDAY. JANUARY 16. 1976
the traffic jams that oc
curred in the attempt to fight
the fire Saturday afternoon.
Chief Vaughn said that
spectators had to be con
tinuously warned to stay
from under wires that
threatened to be burned in
two and could have fallen on
someone and electrocuted
them.
Chief Vaughn said he
intends to seek an ordinance,
if one does not exist, from the
Mayor and Council to
prohibit people from ob
structing emergency vehi
cles and to put enough teeth
into the ordinance that it can
be enforced. The traffic
congestion was so bad that
Mr. Vaughn said if a fireman
or spectator had been
injured, it would have been
extremely difficult to get an
ambulance to the injured
person and just as difficult to
get the ambulance through
the congested streets.

Mr. John Frazier, program consultant with the Georgia Lung Association in Atlanta,
presented a program to 464 Cloverleaf (sth and 6th Grade) 4-H’ers in Butts County. The
program dealt with pollution and how it directly affected our health. The program was
educational as well as informative and was certainly enjoyed by all who had the opportunity
to attend the 4-H Club meetings. Photo by Jerry McLaurin.
