I)II) THE DISCIPLES
UNDERSTAND JESUS?
By Rev. James L. Baxter
It was just a few days
before Jesus was going to
ascent into heaven. He met
with His eleven faithful
followers at a certain
mountain, and began to give
'them final, last minute
instructions. He said, “Go ye
therefore, and teach all
nations, baptizing them in
the name of the Father, and
of the Son, and of the Holy
Ghost;’’ (Matthew 28:19).
The words seemed clear
enough. And yet ama
zingly not one of the
disciples is ever recorded in
scripture as having called
out the words, “. . . in the
name of the Father, and of
the Son, and of the Holy
Ghost” over a convert when
baptizing him!
Did the disciples misun
derstand Jesus? Or did they
understand Him even better
than most people realize?
BAPTIZING THE JEWS
The Day of Pentecost had
come. Jerusalem bulged with
devout Jews who had
gathered there to keep the
feast. In the midst of the
excitement, the 120 followers
of Jesus who were meeting in
an upper room had probably
been overlooked. But some
thing suddenly happened
which focused the attention
of the multitude on this little
group. “They were all filled
with the Holy Ghost, and
began to speak with other
tongues, as the Spirit gave
them utterance” (Acts 2:4).
The Jews who had come
from several different coun
tries heard these Galileans
speaking in many languages.
In fact, every man heard
them speak in the native
tongue of his own country!
Some of the devout men
were amazed. Others doub
ted. But some mocked and
said, “. . . These men are
full of new wine” (Acts 2:13).
Then Peter, who had been
given the keys to the
kingdom (Matthew 16:18-19),
stood up and preached the
first sermon of the Apostolic
church. The convicting
power of God was present,
and those who had gathered
to marvel, doubt and mock
were pricked in their heart.
They said to Peter and the
rest of the apostles, “. . .
Men and brethren, what shall
we do?” (Acts 2:37).
Peter had the answer.
■Without any hesitation he
proclaimed, “Repent, and be
baptized every one of you in
the name of Jesus Christ for
the remission of sins, and ye
shall receive the gift of the
Holy Ghost” (Acts 2:38).
But wait! Wasn’t Peter
there when Jesus told the
disciples how to baptize? Yes
he was. And so were the rest
of the disciples. But all of
them agreed that Peter’s
words were correct. Not one
of them stepped forward to
point out a contradiction
between Peter’s words and
those of Jesus.
BAPTIZING THE
SAMARITANS
Were Peter’s words meant
only for the Jews? No, for
when Philip preached in
Samaria, the men and
women who believed were
baptized . . in the name
of the Lord Jesus” (Acts
8:16).
Peter and John were sent
from Jerusalem to pray with
the Samaritans that they
might receive the Holy
Ghost. And they found nc
fault with the way thes
converts had been baptized'

My beloved Vikings just
plain lost Sunday. The
Steelers treated them as a
bunch of collegiate players
would have treated a high
school team. Woe be unto the
man who ever crosses mean
Joe Green’s path. To my way
of thinking, he’s without a
doubt the best at his position
of anyone in professional
football.
We congratulate the Devi
let tes on their season so far
this year. The girls have
worked mighty hard and it
shows in their play. I
wouldn’t think it too far
fetched to say that they’ve
got a good shot at the region
championship.
The Recreation Depart
ment’s Belly Dancing Course
is planned to reduce tum
mies, shrink waistlines and
coordinate muscles. Next
time the course is offered,
assuming I have no conflict
in time, yours truly plans to
participate. Anything for
self-improvement!
While we’re on the subject
of the Rec. Dept., let me urge
more young ladies and gents
to sign up for youth
basketball. This particular
sport helps our younger folks
to coordinate themselves and
teaches the value of team
work.. Perry Manolis. Rec.
Director, has worked hard to
develop a good program here
and we should show him our
gratitude by backing the
Department's activities.
There seems to be a good
deal of interest here in
self-defense courses, espe
cially for the ladies. Perhaps
if enough gals are interested.

'hev could make it known to
the Rec. folks and such a

Volleyball would be another
good activity.
Walking has always been
known as the best exercise,
and in this day and age of
high gasoline costs, we all
should walk more than we do.
Physical fitness has become
more important to Ameri
cans than ever before;
walking could play a valua
ble part in that fitness. The
schools have made fitness an
important part of their
schedules in later years and
it’s nice for the kids to be
healthy and well-toned; we
older folks could use a little
work in that area, too,
though.
