Heads Westbury
Activities
Doris Cardell, Activity
Director of Westbury Nurs
ing Home, recently partici
pated in the first statewide
meeting of nursing home
activity directors. The meet
ing was held in Macon and
attended by nursing home
activity directors and social
services directors from a
round the state. The meeting
resulted in the statewide
organization of the Georgia
Society of Nursing Home
Activity Directors.
“Georgia is one of 13 states
that has an organized
Nursing Home Activity Di
rectors Society”, Mrs. Car
dell stated, “and our objec
tive is to continually improve
the quality of services
provided in long term health
care facilities in Georgia.”
“Nursing Homes across
the country have repeatedly
been the butt of jokes and
subjected to callous attack
for poor treatment; however,
most nursing homes in
Georgia today are providing
an excellent quality of life for
the resident,” Mrs. Cardell
added.
The Georgia Society of
Nursing Home Activity Di
rectors is sponsored through
the Georgia Nursing Home
Association, a statewide
association representing
Georgia’s nursing homes.
The objective of the Activity
Directors Society will be to
encourage and support pro
grams of continuing educa
tion and training for activity
directors, to maintain liaison
with other health related
groups and to promote
principles and programs
designed to upgrade nursing
home patient activities.
Mrs. Cardell went to work
with Brightmoor Nursing
Home in Griffin, Georgia in
April, 1965. She was in charge
of activities. She came to
work at Westbury Nursing
Home in October, 1973 as
Activity Director. Westbury
Nursing Home is a 197 bed
facility.

The DAR History Month
chairman and her committee
have enjoyed a phase of
planning which involved
student participation. Essays
written by 6th, 7th, and Btb
grade students from Hender
son Junior High, and the
Jackson Christian Academy,
have been read, compared,
and analyzed in order to
select one from each grade
and school most nearly in
conformity with regulations
for State entrance. The
information gleaned from
this project has proven
refreshing, meaningful, and
most informative to both
contestants and to a very
grateful committee.
Each year the month of
February is designated His
tory Month. Each year the
local chapter DAR has
attempted to seek student
participation in all schools to
intensify the interest in
American History.

Editorials
From other newspapers
One of the greatest presidents this nation
ever had, Abraham Lincoln, gave the
nation a simple list of 10 things that he said
we cannot do. Here they are:
“You cannot bring about prosperity by
discouraging thrift.
You cannot strengthen the weak by
weakening the strong.
You cannot help small men by tearing
down big men.
You cannot help the poor by destroying
the rich.
You cannot lift the wage earner by
pulling down the wage payer.
You cannot keep out of trouble by
spending more than your income.

You cannot further brotherhood of men
by inciting class hatred.
You cannot establish sound security on
borrowed money.
You cannot build character and courage
by taking away a man’s initiative.
You cannot really help men by having the
government do for them what they can and
should do for themselves.”
Read them again and see just how many
our nation has been habitually violating in
the past decade. Is there any wonder we are
in trouble? We have made great progress
since these “Lincoln Cannots’” were ex
pressed but we are not as wise as he was.
