Like the people who care
for them, dogs are suscepti
ble to a variety of respiratory
diseases. Running noses and
eyes, rising temperatures,
shallow and rapid breathing,
loss of vitality, and uncon
trolled coughing are typical
symptoms suffered by both
humans and their pets.
One widespread respira
tory disease is infectious
tracheobronchitis, an in
flammation of the trachea
(widepipe) and the bronchial
tubes (branches of the
trachea). Its common name
is “kennel cough”, derived
from the fact that closely
confined animals in kennels,
hospitals, dog shows, and
obedience schools often con
tae it.
Although the specific cause
is unknown, kennel cough is
highly contagious and is
believed to be a virus
transmitted through the air.
It usually begins as a result
of infection but is self-perpe
tuating long after the
infection has been overcome,

as cold, drafts, and high

Open your heart on this day of
affection to those who live in our nursing
home. Your visit will make you a friend,
not a stranger, and bring joy to another human heart.
That’s why the members of the American Nursing Home
Association are holding an open house on Valentine’s Day.
We urge you to visit with those we serve and inspect our
special facilities. Be our guest and see the importance of a
modern nursing home in your community.

crease your pet’s susceptibi
lity to the disease.
The most noticeable symp
tom to watch for is a harsh,
dry cough which becomes
aggravated when your pet is
active or excited. The
coughing attacks are fol
lowed by retching or gagging
while the dog attempts to
clear mucous from its throat.
Each of these attacks causes
damage to the membranes of
the upper respiratory air
passages that, in turn,
trigger more coughing. Your
dog will probably not run a
high temperature during the
early stages and will appear
alert and in good spirits
except while coughing.
We can offer no rapid cure
for kennel cough. Certainly,
home remedies are not at all
effective. The disease re
quires antibiotics, cough
depressants, and sometimes
bronchodilators and tranqui
lizers which can only be
prescribed by a veterinarian.
With proper treatment, ken
nel cough will continue for a
period of two or three weeks
following an incubation pe
riod of five to ten days. If it is

not treated quickly, you may
have a serious case of
pneumonia on your hands.
While your pet is recovering,
keep it isolated indoors in a
well-ventilated area with
only familiar faces around.
Strangers in your home could
trigger a nervous coughing
seizure and cause further
irritation.
To avoid exposing your dog
unnecessarily to infection,
check out carefully any
kennel you may be consider
ing to care for your pet
during vacation time. Make
sure it’s clean and sweet
smelling. Note whether the
boarded dogs are clear-eyed,
well-groomed and look well
fed. Check for proper
ventilation as well as heat
and cold control.
One final word of advice:
Since it is difficult to keep a
healthy pet completely out of
contact with other animals,
make sure it is fully
protected with all necessary
inoculations. Re-vaccination
and therapeutic vitamins
may be recommended by
your veterinarian as addi
tional preventatives against
kennel cough and a variety of
other respiratory ailments.
Some people believed that
gold was begotten by the
sun and that the heat of under
ground veins wholly burned
everything they came into
contact with, turning those
substances into gold.

Telephone customers are now receiving a newly-designed telephone bill which gives more detailed information
than did the bill they previously received, according to Southern Bell District Manager Bill Byram.
“Asa result of customer suggestions and needs, we have made several changes in the telephone bill. These
changes give each customer more detailed information on charges for his or her services, long distance calls and
applicable taxes,” said Byram.
“The first line of the new bill shows the ‘Amount Last Bill’ plus any ‘Payments’ or ‘adjustments’ applied to an
account since the last bill,” he added.
One line shows applicable local, state, federal and total taxes. Additional tax information is shown on ‘Other
Charges and Credits’ statement, and ‘List of Calls’ statement when applicable,” he said.
“On the ‘List of Calls’ statement we have added information to show the ‘Connect Time’ and ‘Minutes’ talked on
any long distance calls,” said Byram.
