SUSIE AND MAUDE
By Jerry McLaurin
Maude makes her home on
Oak Hill Drive in Jackson
with Susie and Jack Little.
The auburn colored Peking
nese originated in Gatlin
burg, Tennessee two and
one-half years ago, but in
spite of her ski resort origins,
Maude can’t ski a lick.
Six months after she was
born, Maude and her family
moved out of Gatlinburg and
into Butts County. Maude
accompanied everyone on
the trip in the car and since
then she has become a
fanatic automobile passen
ger. A jingle of the keys and a
step or two in the direction of
the car and Maude is ready to
roll!
When she’s not out on the
road trying to hitch a joy ride
or down the street visiting
with Rhett, Bill Schroeder’s
Brittany Spaniel, she spends
her time in the Little house.
At bedtime she can be found
curled up beside Susie sound
asleep. On those nights when
Susie is away, Jack has to
make room on his bed for
Maude.
At dinner Maude is more
than accommodating. She’ll
eat any sort of dog food or
anything that comes from the
table. But when it’s time for a
real taste bud thriller, she
prefers freshly popped pop
corn and a glass or two of
apricot brandy to wash the
kernels down. Susie swears
that the responsibility for the
brandy lies with her father
Jack, alone!
Maude’s favorite pasttime
might be simply stated as
Henry Block has
17 reasons why you
should come to us

Reason 12. Our people have been
specially trained .. . and keep
abreast of all the latest tax laws. We
will do our best in preparing your
return. And then we’ll carefully
check it for accuracy.

anything: balls, dirty socks,
old shoes, sticks, hair
curlers; if it’s not nailed
down it gets played with.
She also gets a big kick out
of keeping Susie busy
opening doors for her. The
Little’s house is situated so
that the front door faces the
street and the back door is on
the side; both doors open to
the family room. When Susie
is around and Maude is in the
mood (if she’s breathing
she’s in the mood), Maude
goes to the front door and
whines until Susie lets her
out. Before Susie can return
to her seat Maude is

Disease is beyond any
doubt man’s greatest enemy.
It has been thus for
thousands of years.
The Black Plague took
40,000,000 lives. In the Middle
East, Europe and Asia it
spared one person and took
three.
As late as 1918 the great
influenza epidemic killed
1,000,000 people in the U.S.
and 10,000,000 to 20,000,000
others were killed in all parts
of the world.
Medical science has come
to the aid of man within the
past 4 years. New drugs and
medicines control epidemics
save lives. We are proud
to be a part of the medical
profession our job is to
see that you get the
medication your doctor pre

$391 Per Capita Per
Day To Run Government
New York, Feb. 8 For
residents of Butts County
does the cost of local
government run higher or
lower than it does for people
in other communities?
How much is spent locally,
per capita, for all municipal
and county operations and
for all special services? How
large is the local debt
compared with the average
in other areas?
A voluminous new report,
just released by the Census
Bureau, sheds light on these
matters. It is based upon a
detailed study of local
finances, gathered from
every county in the United
States.
The study, entitled Gov
ernment Finances, is the
first made since fiscal 1967.
They are conducted every
five years.
For people living in Butts
County, the figures show, the
total cost of local govern
mental operations came to
$391 per capita in the year.
In the rest of the nation the
average was ssll per capita
and, in the State of Georgia,
$399.
It took a total of $106.5

THE STEPS OF LENT
Between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday there are forty days? No, that’s not
quite right.
Between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday there are forty weekdays —and six
Sundays. Traditionally the weekdays were the Lenten fast, the Sundays were festi
vals of Christian worship.
If your faith has taught you to observe Lent: by foregoing pleasures or adding
new religious experiences or both. . . those Six Sundays are occasions for taking in
ventory of your spiritual progress.
If yours is a religious background that does not emphasize Lent, those Six Sundays
are still milestones on the way to the great Christian celebration of Christ’s Resur
rection—Easter!
And if, perchance, you have never given much attention to spiritual matters, those
Six Sundays (and the thoughtful days between) are an invitation from your Lord. . .
to walk with Him the path He walked for You.
