Passes At
Local Hospital
Mrs. Cornelia Brooks of
Jackson died Saturday morn
ing at the Sylvan Grove
Hospital in Jackson.
Mrs. Brooks lived in
Griffin 13 years before
moving to Jackson. She was
a member of the Calvary
Baptist Church in Griffin.
Funeral services were
conducted Monday afternoon
at 2 o’clock from the Calvary
Baptist Church with the Rev.
Paul Wade, Rev. R. W.
Jenkins, and Rev. Worth
Huckaby officiating. Inter
ment was in the Bethany
Baptist Church Cemetery in
Henry County. McDonald
Chapel was in charge of
arrangements.
Mrs. Brooks is survived by
her husband, Homer Jack
Brooks; three daughters,
Mrs. George Stanfield of
Jackson, Mrs. Paul Staples
of Rockdale County, Mrs.
Lee Jett of Conyers; a son,
Melton Brooks of Decatur; a
sister, Mrs. Edie Dorsey of
Thomaston; 24 grandchil
dren; 35 great grandchil
dren; several nieces and
nephews.

Butts Native,
Buried Here
Mrs. Annie Kate Ham Biles
of Atlanta died February 20th
at Piedmont Hospital.
Mrs. Biles was born and
reared in Jackson and moved
to Atlanta after her marriage
to John Raymond Biles, also
formerly of Jackson.
Funeral services were
conducted Saturday morning
at ll o’clock from Lyons
Funeral Home in Atlanta.
Interment was in the Jackson
City Cemetery at 2:30 o’clock
Saturday afternoon, Februa
ry 22nd.
Mrs. Biles is survived by
her husband; two daughters,
Mrs. Anna Jean Pierce of
Atlanta, and Mrs. Evelyn
Wilson of Orlando, Fla.; one
son, John Raymond Biles, Jr.
of Athens; two sisters, Mrs.
Homer Caldwell of Jackson
and Mrs. Helen McGill of
Oklahoma City, Okla.: seve
ral grandchildren; three
great-great-grandchildren.

Sandy Creek
Mr. Chester Pritchett
Smith, 62, of 761 Trinity
Place, Macon, died Sunday,
morning at the Medical
Center of Central Georgia
following an illness of three
weeks and a longer period of
declining health.
Mr. Smith was a native of
Butts County, the son of the
late Mr. Joseph Howard
Smith and Mrs. Annie
Josephine Spier Smith.
Mr. Smith formerly lived
in Jackson. He was a retired
employee of Bibb Manufac
turing Company, working
there until December 1974.
He was a member of Enon
Baptist Church in Jasper
County.
Funeral services were held
Monday at 3 o’clock from the
Sandy Creek Primitive Bap
tist Church with Rev.
Franklin B. Clark officiating.'
Interment was in the Sandy
Creek Cemetery with Hais
ten Funeral Home in charge
of arrangements.
Mr. Smith is survived by
two daughters, Mrs. Donald
Day of Macon and Mrs.
Marion Reeves of Carrollton;
two sons, W. H. Smith of
Carrollton and Lindsey smith
of Cookeville, Tennessee;
two sisters, Mrs. L. L.
Holloway of Monticello and
Mrs. Johncie Snow of
Douglas; seven grandchil
dren; several nieces and
nephews.
Pallbearers were David
Tietjen, Frankie Snow, Ron
nie Snow, Wynsol Smith,
Larry Smith, and Sam Smith.

spent the weekend with Mrs.
Baker’s parents, Mr. and

Augusta and Mr. and Mrs.

Mrs. Weeder Branan was
luncheon guest of Mr. and
Mrs. Sammy Webb on
Sunday.
Mr. J. L. Pearson returned
home Saturday after spend
ing two and a half weeks in
Daytona Beach, Florida with
his son and his family, Mr.
and Mrs. Harold Pearson.

Ben Watkins
Dies In
El Paso
Mr. Ben Watkins, 79,
prominent El Paso, Texas
realtor, died about 11:30
o’clock Friday morning,
February 21st, in an El Paso
hospital, after an illness of
several months. Death resul
ted from a massive heart
attack following an illness
caused by hepatitis.
Mr. Watkins was the son of
Mr. G. I. Watkins and Mrs.
Delia Wright Watkins, both
of whom formerly resided at
Indian Springs.
Funeral services were
conducted Monday morning
at ten o’clock from the chapel
of Harden-Orr and McDaniel
Funeral Home. Interment
was in El Paso.
At the request of the
family, the obituary of Mr.
Watkins will be published at
*a later date.
Among survivors are two
sisters. Miss Delia Watkins
and Miss Georgie Watkins; a
brother, R. Wright Watkins;
two nephews, Richard W.
Watkins, Jr. of Jackson and
Robert Bryan Watkins of
Marietta.

Mrs. Nelson
Dies After
Long Illness
Mrs. T. Whit Nelson, 85, of
Route 1, Flovilla, died
Wednesday morning, Febru
ary 19th, at Sylvan Grove
Hospital following a period of
declining health extending
over several years. She was
admitted to the hospital on
Tuesday, February 18th.
The former Miss Annie
Hay, she was born in Butts
County on October 8,1889, the
daughter of the late Mr.
Edmond Hay and Mrs. Alice
Bell Hay. Her husband, the
late Whit Nelson, was a
former Butts County Com
missioner.
Mrs. Nelson was a member
of Macedonia Baptist
Church.
Funeral services were
conducted Friday afternoon,
February 21st, at two o’clock
from the chapel of Haisten
Funeral Home in Jackson
with Rev. R. W. Jenkins,
pastor of Macedonia Baptist
Church, and Rev. Don
Folsom, pastor of the First
Baptist Church of Jackson,
officiating. Interment was in
the Jackson City Cemetery

a two week trip to Florida,
where they enjoyed viewing
the Daytona 500. Those in

included Mr. Frank Blunk,
Miss Maude Kelly from New
York, Mrs. Marie Zach of
New Jersey, and Mr. and
Mrs. George A. Melton of
Silver, N.C. While in Florida
the Harrises traveled to
Largo where they visited

wife, Mr. and Mrs. P. E.
