MRS. MARY RUTH KERSEY
Our working gal for this
week is Mrs. Mary Ruth
Kersey, homemaker and
“expert on little people.”
Mary Ruth, who keeps
children in her home, prefers
not to be called a babysitter.
As she so aptly put it, “I
consider children little peo
ple with their own personali
ties and ideas and besides,”
she laughed, “I don’t do too
much sitting!”
As Mary Ruth keeps 4
children under four years of
age, I’m quite sure she
doesn’t do too much sitting.
Although she has worked
with children on a regular
basis before, this week’s gal
has only been keeping “little
people” in her home weekly
since October of 1974. She has
a delightful daily schedule
which is adhered to like
clockwork: the youngsters
have a regular playtime, art
time, naptime, story time
and mealtime. Perhaps Ma
ry Ruth’s success might be
attributed to the fact that she
does believe so firmly in
organization. Commenting
that the children had one
favorite TV show, Sesame
Street, Mary Ruth said that
she tried to provide several
different art activities such
as water coloring and play
dough work, because she
didn’t believe “children
should spend too much time
in front of a television set.”
As you can well imagine,
anyone who spends her time
with youngsters as much as
this week’s gal does, is bound
to hear and share some
charming conversations. On
one occasion, Mary Ruth was
keeping a little miss who was
feeling quite sorry for
herself. She wouldn’t play
with the other children and
for several days would stand

by herself saying, “Nobody
loves me, nobody.” Mary
Ruth would hug her and try
to console her, saying,
“Don’t say that; Mary Ruth
loves you.” The young lady
persisted and the expe
rienced “people keeper”
decided to try something. She
(Mary Ruth) stood in the
middle of the nursery, hung
her head and stated, “nobody
loves me, nobody.” The sad
little lady rushed over to
Mary Ruth, patted her and
said, “Don’t cry, Mary Ruth;
Albert loves you.” (Albert is
the Kerseys’ dog!)
Mary Ruth Kersey has
kept my crew of three on
many occasions, both in
daytime hours and at night; I
can therefore state from
first-hand experience that
this week’s gal is a miracle
worker when it comes to
dealing with children. Her
recipe for success “just plain
old love and understanding”,
is kept in force at all times.
She is the type of person with
whom I can fully trust my
own little people for any
length of time, day or night,
sunshine or rain, sleet or
snow. She’s sort of like the
mailman!
The Kersey family, consis
ting of father Gerald. Tim,
age 14, Joe, age 12, and Lisa,
age 10, give Mother a helping
hand whenever it’s needed.
The entire family are sports
lovers and are very interes
ted and active in their
community and church.
Mary Ruth participates in
the children’s activities, as
she is a member of the Junior
High Booster Club along with
husband Gerald.
Let me just say in closing
that if you are in need of a
really good expert on youngs
ters, I could recommend no

Did you ever hear of a
doctor giving a patient a
“cocktail”? The “Atomic
Cocktail” is used in goiter
cases. Radioiodine is admi
nistered in a glass of water.
The result is that the
radio-isotope destroys the
excess tissue in the thyroid
gland, thus eliminating the
goiter.
This is just one of the few
medications in the new field
of atomic medicine. Who
knows, some day the atom
may come up with a cure for
the common cold.
Until they come up with a
cure for the common
cold —we will continue
supplying you with medica
tions to relieve the symptoms
—and make you feel better,
anyway.

Ruth Aultman of Macon,
Sixth District director of the
Georgia Retired Teachers
Association, spoke briefly of
her interest in the new unit,
which she helped to organize
and offered her services and
cooperation in the future.
The main speaker for the
occasion was Mr. Kankakee
Anderson of Rockmart, who
is the national representative
of Retired Teachers in
Georgia. Mr. Anderson sum
marized the growth of the
Georgia Retirement System,
emphasizing the importance
of having a strong state and
national organization. He
discussed the Senate and
House Bills that have been
introduced in the General
Assembly pertaining to re
tired teachers and urged
teachers to contact their
representatives concerning
these bills. Mrs. Anderson
accompanied her husband to
the meeting.
All retired teachers in
Butts County are invited to
join the Butts County Unit.
Anyone desiring to get
information concerning
membership may call Miss
