ISA Graduation May 27
At Macedonia Church
Graduation exercises for
Indian Springs Academy
were held Tuesday night,
May 27th, at Macedonia
Baptist Church with a large
crowd present for the
impressive ceremonies.
The salutatory address
was given by Carolyn Sue
Moore, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. James Talmadge
Moore, Sr. Carolyn has a
high school average of % and
has been a constant member
of the Honor Society. Her
high school honors include a
freshmen scholarship award
and a tenth grade mathe
matics award. She is also the
recipient of a University of
Georgia Certificate of Merit.
The valedictory address
was given by David Lee
Cawthon, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Russell Cawthon.
David has a high school
average of 98. Throughout his
high school years, he has
been a member of the Honor
Society, serving as president
one year. David has served
on the annual staff for two
years and has also worked on
the paper staff. He has
received two science awards,
two history awards, and a
typewriting award. This year
he received recognition of
academic achievement at the
STAR Student Banquet, and
a certificate of merit from
the University of Georgia.
David has played two years
on the baseball team and was
leading scorer in basketball
this year.
Amie Potts, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Potts,
was the honor graduate.
Amie has an overall high
school average of 93. She has
been a member of the Honor
Society during her high
school career, serving as
president this year. She is
editor of the 1975
“Talisman”, the ISA year
book. She has also worked on
the paper staff.
David Cawthon was recipi
ent of the SIOO Gordon
College Scholarship given to
each valedictorian and has
signified his intention of
attending Gordon Junior
College. David attended a
workshop at Abraham Bald
win College as a candidate
from Butts County. He had
the distinct honor of placing
first at the workshop from
among 288 delegates from
over the state.
The Butts County Sports
men’s Club Scholarship and
the Soil Conservation
Scholarship were both a
warded to Tim Todd. Tim
plans to attend the Univers
ity of Georgia and will enter
school there for the study of
Forestry and Wildlife.
Samuel A. Freeman, head
master, presented David the
Gordon scholarship while
Luther Washington present
ed Tim the Freshman
Conservation scholarship,
and Byron Britt, president of
Butts Sportsmen’s Club,
presented his organization’s
scholarship to Tim.
Porter H. Cawthon, chair
man of the Board of
Directors, of Indian Springs
Academy, presented diplo
mas to Aubrey Harold
Cawthon, David Lee Caw
thon, Rankin Lee Cook, Jan
Marsh, Carolyn Sue Moore,
Amie Lou Potts, Michael
Lane Riley, and Marion
Timothy Todd.
The exercises, held at
Macedonia Baptist Church,
were begun by the Proces
sional, “Pomp and Circum
stance,” by Elgar. This was
followed by the pledge to the
flag, led by Tim Todd. Rev.
A. L. Price, pastor of Second
Baptist Church, delivered the
invocation. Jerry M. Hunt,
Jr. rendered a vocal solo,
“The Impossible Dream.”
Carolyn Sue Moore was the
first speaker and gave the
welcome. Amie Lou Potts
spoke next on “Our Home
work.” David Lee Cawthon
was the third speaker and his
valedictory was “Inner
Voices.”
The benediction was given
by Rev. R. W. Jenkins,
pastor of the host church.
The graduation program was
concluded by the recessional.
“March from Aida” by
Verdi.

Zell Miller To Speak
At Gordon Graduation
BARNESVILLE Lt.
Gov. Zell Miller will speak at
Gordon Junior College’s
third annual commencement
excercises on Sunday, June
8.
One-hundred and five stu
dents will receive Associate
in Arts degrees at the 4 p.m.
ceremony on Lambdin Hall
Green.
Elected Georgia’s lieute
nant governor this year,
Miller previously served
under Gov. Jimmy Carter as
a member of the State Board
of Pardons and Paroles. For
two years he served as the
executive secretary to Gov.
Lester Maddox. In 1965 he
was appointed the director of
the State Board of Cor
rections, executive director
of the Democratic Party of
Georgia, state senator,
mayor of Young Harris, and
publisher of a county weekly
newspaper.
Miller graduated from the
University of Georgia with
A.B. and M.A. degrees. He
later completed two years of
graduate work toward the
Ph.D. degree.
He is married to the former
Shirley Carver of Andrews,
N.C., whom he met as a
student at Young Harris
College. They have two sons,
Murphy and Matthew, who
are in college.

Little Miss Michelle Denise
Cartin, infant daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. David Cartin of
Route 3, Jackson, died early
Thursday morning, May
22nd, at the Griffin-Spalding
County Hospital.
Graveside services were
conducted Saturday morning
at 11 o’clock in Oak
Hill Cemetery, Griffin, with
the Rev. Cecil Dix offici
ating. McDonald Chapel was
in charge of arrangements.
Survivors, in addition to
her parents, are grand
parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. M.
Cartin of Augusta and Mrs.
Colie Blair of Griffin.
